A Pittsburgh Wall We Know and Love (and a Couple of our Regular Retaining Walls)

A very special wall– Forbes Field.

Forbes Field is long gone (1972)

-but the wall where the1960 World Series was won by Bill Mazeroski’s homerun stands.

It’s called the Greatest Homerun Ever. You can watch it at YouTube here

And the retaining walls of Pittsburgh are featured prominently in Rick Sebak‘s excellent video 25 Things I Like About Pittsburgh available for viewing on Youtube for a short time.

You can’t believe how many retaining walls there are in every neighborhood of the city.

Tom Cruise Movie, ONE SHOT, Lights Up 10th Street Bridge Wednesday Night

The movie is causing a buzz and some traffic around the Burgh. One Shot is the name of the film after a novel by Lee Child. On the way to my photo class I saw the lights set up on the bridge and a few giant movie lights on top of some buildings. Heard on the radio Armstrong Tunnels would be closed. Remembered my photo for the weekly challenge of fall, with the 10th St Bridge in the autumn light and thought I would go my usual school route. Here is the series of bridge shots taken on the way home from class Wednesday night. A circuitous route but worth the detour in my opinion.

I could hear and see a car race and screech across the bridge as I photographed. Next time I will bring a spotter to keep watch as I pulled the car over but it is dark and a bit creepy up on the top of Arlington Avenue, my route home from school. I have shot from this angle before and here is the link to the daytime photo.

Hungry

Sometimes you are hungry
for something that is just not good for you.
And you eat it.

And regret doing so.

Or not!

Wednesday nights I take a class at Manchester Craftsmen’s and eat an early dinner on the South Side, driving down the slopes from Arlington. The last two weeks it was Carson Street Deli sandwiches but then I started thinking French fries. Undoing all the work at the gym yesterday.

So I crossed at 16th St and went into Mario’s, the only patron at that off hour but not for long. Cory was hosting and tending bar and took my order for an Alpine burger (don’t ask) and their house cut fries. A tall ginger ale. I asked if I could photograph the stained glass windows. Designed by Williams Stained Glass of Bethel Park. It was a good time to photograph the architectural details. Woshner’s was once “haberdashery” and is now Mario’s. I was too early for Karaoke night. Had to get to class.
