There’s a Slight Problem

I didn’t check their work.

Found near the playground

“The order of operations are the rules that tell us the sequence in which we should solve an equation with multiple operations.

The order is PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, and Division (from left to right), Addition and Subtraction (from left to right”

It’s Pi Day

What is pi? “pi—which is written as the Greek letter for p, or π—is the ratio of the circumference of any circle to the diameter of that circle

Mixing it up. Pie on Pi Day

Rob this post is for you. Rob is a certified Pie Judge. Here’s a post of National Pie day in January 2012. Sorry I missed National Day Pie Day this year but now it’s Pi Day 3.14.

Did you know you can order Pi Day sock yarn? maybe for next year Fibernymph Dyeworks says “ all of our Pi Day colorways, the striping pattern is based on the numeric sequence of pi – 3.141592…, which is a non-repeating number. Thus, the stripe sequence does not repeat within the skein, and you will not be able to get a matching pair of socks (or anything) from a single skein. But if you’re a math geek, that’s part of the fun! We include a stitch marker affixed to the beginning of the sequence”

The Smithsonian Has One

What is it?

“Dial as you would your telephone?”

It’s a Ken+ Add machine, that’s what. From the 1950’s. Manufactured in Duluth Minnesota  You can see it’s definitely handheld.

NOTE to viewers: There are 27 likes on this post but that’s because something is wrong  No one has even viewed the post yet.  If anyone can explain it to me, thanks.  I changed the wording on the comment box.  Was editing an old post in the app.  Who knows. It doesn’t add up!

Pi Day: 3.14 -Reblog from the Archives

3.14.15 9:26:53 CELEBRATING SPECIAL PI DAY AT SCHOOL

A very special Pi Day.  Once in a century.  Tomorrow, 3.14.15 is it.    Get ready!

Celebrated at school today, 3-13-15._ Spearheaded by Mrs. Mihalic.  Creating some spirit!

There were numbers posted all around the hallways on the 800 level to who-knows-what place…..some cool art which I didn’t get to photograph yet.

Eat'n Park Pi Day Cookies

And my neighbor across the hall…. I went in this morning and said “Hey, where’s your Pi shirt?” and then she turned around and showed me!

Mrs. Mihalic, math teacher, created a wildly spirited event, complete with Pi Day cookies she special ordered from Eat’n Park

Posting this one so you can see how you had to land on a certain number when the music stopped to win a slice of pie.

Garden of Constants by Artist Barbara Grygutis

Seen last week when I was on Ohio, I was walking to the swim meet from the  parking garage. And I did experienced exactly what the article quoted below says….”a fun surprise to stumble upon”

The Garden of Constants at the Ohio State University is a fun surprise to stumble upon. The massive, colorful numbers bring a whimsical air to the lawn outside the engineering building. They’ve stood there since 1994… “ from atlasobscura.com the large numbers are sculpted  from copper and bronze by artist Barbara Grygutis (click her name to see her other public art sculptures)

I will have to return to photograph these….

…. you’ll find pavers containing mathematical and formulaic constants. The formulas reflect the electrical engineering and computer science activities and classes that take place within the surrounding buildings.“

Greek to Me

Eighth letter of the Greek alphabet or the “representation of the angular position of a vector” in math.

Theta.

Tonight Steve suggested we eat at Penn Brewery as it’s my sister’s last night in Pittsburgh.

The appetizer order of onion rings revealed this symbol.

The Satisfaction of Sock Knitting

A Handknit Sock

There’s a math to it. The cast on. Count
the multiples of four.
Last year it was hats and cowls.
This year, socks.
I want to try the fish lips kiss heel.

It’s a simple thing. How a sock is knit.
You start with yarn.
Needles as slim as toothpicks.
Terms like toe and gusset and cuff.
My friend says, "it’s too much work."

There’s a rhythm in the repetition.
The making. Clockwise circles.
Some throw, some pick.
Row after row after row.
In time you get length and warmth.

There’s the calm you long for,
around and around and around.
Turn heel for a path to Zen.
You think of those you love.
The grandmother who taught you.

The wet squeezed out,
pairs hang to dry. Later fold
their softness, admire the colors,
ignore imperfections.
Find comfort, hidden in shoes.
My squishy hand knit socks.
