Beets. Yes or no?

Do you like to eat beets?

The beets were delivered in the farm box today.

I thought I’d prepare them for supper. After I cooked them on top of the stove for about a half an hour, I saw the pan of beautiful crimson liquid and quickly retrieved a skein of ecru wool yarn which was meant to be dyed. I’d received it from a woolswapper, Cheryl, and once thought I’d experiment and dye it with Kool-Aid. She’d sent me a skein of Kraemer Textiles undyed yarn. I soaked it in water snd vinegar first and lowered it into the pan. Covered it and simmered the pan a bit. I dyed just the one skein of yarn in beet juice and a bit of white vinegar, rinsed it in cool water and hung to dry in the bathroom. Cant wait to knit with it.

But I digress. Beets? To eat. Yes or no?

Beautiful beets
Soaking in the pan
Sucked up the liquid
A bit varied in tone. Drying in the shower

  1. I love beets. One of my favorite foods. My daughter-in-law makes them for me as a special treat every year on my birthday and on Father’s Day. I also like the color of the yarn.

    • Thanks Ken. I love that your DIL makes them for you. And the color of the yarn is even better in person.

  2. Love beets roasted in a salad. Never thought to dye yarn with beet cooking water, I’ll have to try it!

    • Awww I thought of toasting as I read that intensifies the flavor but then I wouldn’t have had the pan of juice to dye the yarn.

  3. Yes for me on the beets. Especially, like them chilled in a salad. My Aunts used to make beet soup. Berts make me think of them.

  4. A comment by Didi van Frits. all the way from Germany on Fb “ beets = Rote Beete – we use it, mixed with potatoes, mayonnaise, onions, slices of apples for a red salat. Tasty! P.S.: 2/3 potatoes, 1/3 beets, cooked, cooked eggs, apple, onions my wife Barbara adds more precisely.”

  5. Beautiful color! Did it persist when the wool was washed and dried?
I took a course many years ago on making plant dyes. Our beet test sure didn’t get a color like that, no matter what mordant we used!

  6. I’m not a fan of beets as I consumed too many overcooked and mushy ones as a child. But I think it’s time to re-assess and, perhaps, roast beets. I bet I would like those.

The yarn hue is beautiful. What do you plan to knit?

  7. I love beets, especially pickled beets. OMG, loved the dyed yarn in beet juice, it produced a beautiful color. Can’t wait to see how it knits up. I’ll have to try this with my handspun yarn. Thanks for sharing.

  8. I’m excited to see how that dyed yarn looks when you make your beet shawl! I do love beets, especially roasted (I put them in foil with olive oil and roast them – when tender I peel them). Also love them cold in a salad with mandarin oranges.

Thanks for your visit. It's always good to hear you stopped by.
