Franconia Notch Park from the Car

The Granite landmark Old Man of the Mountain or Great Stone Face in New Hampshire collapsed more than twenty years ago. There’s an article about how it happened.

Today, visitors can follow a scenic pathway to Profile Lake and the new Old Man of the Mountain Profiler Plaza. Sculptors Ron Magers and Shelly Bradbury created a series of steel profiler rods which point toward the cliff where the Old Man once stood. When a visitor sights along the edge of one of the rods, the Old Man’s profile comes into view.

  1. I remember that. I think the old man is on the back of New Hampshire’s quarter.

    • Same! But I do love the ingenuity people have to somewhat recreate the experience for visitors on the ground.

Thanks for your visit. It's always good to hear you stopped by.
