Egg Salad Thoughts

Egg salad is a dish I never cared for growing up. I thought the eggs were stinky. The texture unappealing. But freshly made egg salad spread on a saltine cracker or a slice of bread is a satisfying taste to me now. I’ve friends who add mustard, lemon juice, butter, relish, paprika ……making it fancy, but today it’s simple egg salad. Easy on the Mayo.

Octagonal Houses Were A Fad

Around 1850! Who knew?

The words Hendricks House on the historical marker caught my eye as I was a passenger in the back seat. We were at the New York Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck a couple of weeks ago and staying in Red Hook where this landmark is located. It’s the town’s Public Library.

Built in 1865. Randi pulled over so I could capture these pics.

“The Hendricks House is a rare surviving example of the octagonal concrete form of house construction popularized in the mid-19th century by phrenologist and author Orson Squire Fowler, whose book A Home for All (1850, 1854) launched a nationwide fad for octagonal buildings. Between 1847 and 1856, Fowler built his own octagonal concrete house in nearby Fishkill, which may have provided inspiration for local builders in Dutchess County”

Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular Guest Blog

Guest blogger Eileen from Massachusetts went with her family to

Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at

Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island. They do this every year for the month of October. It’s a walk through the woods surrounded by Jack o’ Lanterns. This year’s theme was television through the decades. Started with 1950’s. Ended with 2010’s. From Sgt Bilko to Game of Thrones. In between were some familiar ones to me; Addams Family, I Love Lucy, MASH, etc. Lizzie and Kevin needed us to identify them. 😀”

Great job capturing the thousands of Jack-O-Lanterns. Thanks Eileen. Looks like a wonderful evening and happy we could join you virtually.

Why is it called a Buckeye?

“….name from the whitish scar found on each brown seed. It is said to give the seed the appearance of a deer’s eye.” Link on Yellow Buckeye below

Everything about them is toxic. If you want to plant one, click here Also called a horse chestnut. It’s Ohio’s State Tree.

I took these photos in Ohio earlier in the month. I didn’t know there were different types of buckeye trees. There are several types Ohio, Yellow and California are a few.

Here’s the Yellow Buckeye on a street parallel to Laura‘s.

No Longer Standing

You might remember my August 2022 post of Dead Trees Standing Although there were three photos in the post, one tree was in Columbus. I noticed that the two dead trees in the park across the street are no longer there. They must have taken them down while I was out of town as I surely would have heard the operation.
