Soda Fountain and Chocolates

Yetter’s in Millvale, PASaturday morning.

I wanted my grandchildren to see an old time soda fountain. It was too early for ice cream so we bought some things to-go, for later after the Children’s Museum-snacks,  bottles of water, chocolate coins and some sour patch kids from the candy selection.

We will return for ice cream before they head home.

Running in the Rain to the Cloud Arbor Again

Three grandkids this visit. No waiting until AFTER the Children’s Museum today.  They went straight to it. The rain really affected the cloud of mist today, hanging so low.

Meet Flashes of Fire Author

IMG_4222

Ed Lipsman.  Author of Flashes of Fire. His debut novel.

(Priced reasonably @ 3.99)  download onto a kindle. I love the Pittsburgh place references in it but you can live anywhere and enjoy his writing.

I know Ed from working together in an After School Program where he ran a terrific physical fitness program for our 4-8th graders.

He’s a loyal blog follower since the beginning, too.  An all around great person!

I’m honored to have taken his author photo and happy to get the word out about his book.

For most of his adult life, Ed Lipsman studied a variety of martial

arts, including sword. He was a successful fighter in a medieval group,

winning a number of tournaments. Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor

at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where one of the

courses he teaches is a sword class. Flashes of Fire is his first book.

“What’s Chase Harte to do??

He gets struck with lightning while leaving a medieval fighting tournament and is transported to a strange, brutal, feudal world where swords rule and law doesn’t.”

Goose Jam

Freeport Road in Aspinwall.  All traffic stopped.  No young geese splatted on this busy road today.  Goose is such a funny word.

And to make today’s post slightly more interesting check out TheFreeDictionary

goose

1. n. a silly oaf; an oaf. Oh, I’m such a silly goose!
2. tv. to (attempt to) poke something, such as a finger, in someone’s anus. Freddy tried to goose me!
3. n. an attempt to goose someone. (As in sense 2) He tried to give me a goose.
4. tv. to rev up an engine; to press down hard on the accelerator of a car. Why don’t you goose the thing and see how fast it’ll go?
5. n. an act of suddenly pressing down the accelerator of a car. Give it a good goose and see what happens.

Notice -“Booming Stats” on Abandoned Blog Today

Five years ago I tried to create a recipe blog from my grandmother’s wooden recipe box and my mother’s recipe cards. I’d forgotten all about it until today when I got a notice from WordPress. Try this link to the blog   A friend wrote she had trouble

getting to itScreen Shot 2016-07-27 at 11.13.43 PM.png

Throwback Recipes Blog

I didn’t stick with this blog for very long.

There were SIX followers. Throwback seemed as if the recipes weren’t really relevant nowadays.

It stopped seeming like such a cool idea.

But today I got a notice “Your stats are BOOMING!”  On the Throwback Recipes blog.  Rhubarb Cake recipe and the home page

And 65 hits (that’s booming after zero) are from El Salvador, 2 are from United States and 1 from Australia. And in just ONE hour.

So thought I would share about my abandoned blog that got rediscovered today.

Did you ever start a blog and abandon it?

It’s always nice to receive those notices from WordPress.

Here is the Chocolate Pound Cake recipe my mother made

Balls in the Air

Taking a break from the cherry on top challenge although I was considering another shoot.

When the family visited we went to the Children’s Museum a couple of times.  One of the favorite rooms is called The Garage. The kids tried to catch the balls that were held up by air blowing out of the table.

IMG_3265Laura held Charles as he reached for the ball.

It was easier for Maura to catch the balls.

On Top of the World

The city of Pittsburgh’s Mt. Washington (elevation 6,289) just before sunset, Monday evening.

Inspired by the Weekly Photo Challenge

and a big nod to  Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen sculpture Spoonbridge and Cherry in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the sculpture garden- Walker Art Center   The spoon weighs 5,800 pounds the cherry 1,200 pounds. I saw this sculpture when we visited Matthew when he was a student at Macalester College in St. Paul. It came to mind when I was thinking about photographing a cherry on top for the weekly photo challenge.

And the cell phone shots below to compare which I thought looked better than the good camera.

Without the spoon, the city in focus

Cherry on Top, Literally

A Rainier cherry on top of Ted the bear’s head.

(Spoiler: Don’t read this piece about the Legend of William Tell by the Smithsonian if you like the story you heard as a child.)

Polk, Pennsylvania Street Name

I had to turn the car around and take a photograph when I read this street name.

Someone was creative in Venango County, Polk, PA.

Do you ever wonder who names the streets?

In the same zip code 16432- Frozen Toe Road, Riddle Street, Hells Kitchen Street, Rainbow Road, Broken Arrow Road,  Log Cemetery Road, Fishermans Cove, Gameland.

If you had a time machine, to what period of time would you travel?

Cherry on Top of a Burnt Almond Torte

Cherry on Top

The fun weekly photo challenge by Michelle W.   I should get in the car and head to a local ice cream shop but it’s really humid and hot and we’ve already been out for dinner.  Wish I knew the Cherry on Top challenge beforehand but then I remembered a Cherry on Top I photographed six years ago.

The following was posted in May 2010.  Since then the Burnt Almond Torte was declared America’s Greatest Cake Here’s the article Thank You, Pittsburgh, For The Greatest Cake America Has Ever Made   (By the way, I never saw a cherry on top of a Prantl’s Burnt Almond Torte)

Burnt Almond TorteAnd here is the original writing from my May 2010 blog post

Burnt Almond Torte and Copycat Recipe

Different regions prefer certain pastries, baked goods.  Burnt Almond Torte is popular in Pittsburgh. I’ve seen it as a wedding cake. tiered!  Who brought the recipe here I don’t know but many Pittsburghers LOVE it.  I’d never tasted one until we moved here.  This one is from the Oakmont Bakery.  Joan brought it to dinner one night.  We split it three ways. Don’t know who ate the cherry.  Not me.  But before we devoured it, I photographed it.  Here is a link to the Recipezaar Copycat Prantl’s Burnt Almond Torte recipe in case you want to have a taste of Pittsburgh Pastry/Dessert.  I hear there’s one where chocolate is involved.

Checking the Copycat Recipe is still valid, YES!!!

The Molasses Swamp is now a Chocolate Swamp post was a slow low day on the blog today.  Bet this Cherry on Top will top it!!
