Patron Saint of Bakers and Pastry Chefs – Saint Honoré

Honoratus of Amiens  (who died in 600) .  The Feast Day is May 16th but no matter.

The nice woman at Jean-Marc Chatellier Bakery in Millvale said “Saint Honoré” when I asked.

Here he is, carved from wood,  with his bread peel with some sheafs of wheat, watching over the baker

August 2 is the last day before the bakery goes on vacation.  We just made it on our way to the Children’s Museum.

Peace and Harmony the Goal at Camp Grandma This Week

Siblings.  The two youngest. Jack is 7 Maura is 5

My grandchildren.

They aren’t known for being charter members of the “get-along” gang.

In fact, they can annoy and aggravate one another with a simple song, a glance, a perceived injustice.  Oh  my.  Sounds exhausting?

So Mark (their dad called) and ask how Punch and Judy were doing.  It’s been only 24 hours.

Will see how it goes.  Today there were a few rough spots but they are settling into a routine here.

I was wishing I still had the book. He Hit Me First so I could refresh my understanding of sibling rivalry.

Pictures don’t always tell the whole story.

harmony Camp Duo (1)Here they are sitting on the stump ,holding bottles of bubbles from our generous neighbor.   The tree stump was turned into a seat when the tree was cut down.

They kids wanted individual photos, each sitting on the special wooden seat.

I said I had just one shot left on my camera card which was the absolute truth.  I could have deleted a photo on the card to make room for two pics but it forced them to sit together. We had just come from a nice time at the playground in the park.

Silvery-Cheeked Hornbills, Cheetah and Camel Rides at the Columbus Zoo

The new Heart of Africa  region (43 Acres) is open at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

I have mixed feelings about zoos but know that they do important animal conservation work and support programs around the world that assist in this effort. The weather was cool for a July day so we kept taking our jackets and sweaters on and off.

I can tell you that  the grandkids LOVE going to the zoo to see the animals.

There is always something interesting to learn and experience.  A first for the kids was the camel ride.
Six camels are rotated to give the rides.

Aunt Lala was remembering a lengthy camel ride she had in Egypt that she didn’t really enjoy but everyone had fun on Monday.

Yes, it was a bumpy ride.

The Big Lebowski Inspired Hostess Gift

This is Julia.

She went to Marquette with my son Mark in the mid-nineties.

Coincidentally, Mark and Julia saw each other years later at an Ohio swim meet where their daughters were swimming.

Sunday evening Julia and Rick and their family came over to Mark and Erika’s home for hamburgers on the grill.

Each family has four kids so they were laughing about meeting Freshman year, whoever thought they’d be eating together with their four kids apiece.

Wine Charms Lebowski

Julia brought these Wine Charms that spelled out LEBOWSKI as she’d seen some of Mark’s photos of the 13th Annual Lebowski fest he had just attended with my first cousin Jim.

She makes all different kinds of charms and you can check out her Charms Kool Page

Antique Emporium in Beaver Falls, PA

Upon entering the Antique Emporium, a lovely woman  invited me to have cool water, offered me a glass of wine, the use of the facilities AND there was a basket of free tomatoes.

Obviously I was a a first-timer.  “You are welcome to take photographs. ” she said.      That was all I needed.

There are three floors and over 75 Dealers’ Booths of everything you can think of- and then some more things you didn’t  know existed in the world.

The “like items” are categorized and displayed together, so if you are into political buttons, license plates, or milk bottle collections you don’t have to dig through other stuff.  It is so organized and tidy.

Oram’s Donuts in Joe Namath’s Hometown – Beaver Falls, PA

More than a decade ago I saw a show narrated by Rick Sebak on PBS about Oram’s Bakery in Beaver Falls, PA. Beaver Falls is about 35 miles Northwest of the city and is on the Beaver River.  ( I just looked it up and the show was out in 1999)

Their cinnamon rolls are their most popular donut, and they appeared to be the size of dinner plates. Well, at least a luncheon plate. I am sure each one weighs a half a pound.

I’d always intended to go check them out.

Today I did.

Oram's Cinnamon Rolls

They barely fit in the bakery box.

I bought a seventh cinnamon roll for me to eat for lunch and Josh put it in a white paper bakery bag for me.

Orams 1 Josh

Here is Josh graciously posing for me with the box of the donuts. Thank you Josh.

I was going to take the box to Ohio but the car was so hot that when I was at the Beaver Falls Post Office I saw a woman waiting in a car,  so I asked her if she liked Oram’s donuts and she said yes so I went to the car and gave her the box.  She was most appreciative.

Orams 5 Nicole

Nicole is constructing boxes to hold donut orders.

Josh and his brother built this LEGO®  donut bakery.   They sent a design to a company online and they sent the design kit to build, software is involved.  It’s on display in the bakery and I found it fascinating.

Oh yes, I mentioned that Beaver Falls is  Football Hall of Famer Joe Namath‘s hometown so I found the plaque to him by the library(the library is closed on Friday’s 🙁 )    I drove by the Beaver Falls Senior High School but it is a modern one now and so I  figured the old one must be the Middle School next door.

Here is the plaqueJoe Namath Plaque

My friend Gail and her parents took me to see the JETS play in the late sixties and you know who the quarterback was in that game!

The Photographer’s Eye – Guest Blog from Croatia

My son Matthew writes from Zagreb, Croatia………………

Vedrana and I spent the day touring her hometown of Rijeka, snapping shot after shot, trying to come up with something worthy of a guest post on mom’s blog.

We raced up to the Fortress of Trsat to catch the “golden hour” and found these fabulous dragons, eager to pose for us.

I took ten pictures, trying to get just the right one and this was the best I could do.

Vedrana took just one:

When I saw the stunning photograph she had created I threw up my hands, recognizing that my novice attempts had been outclassed in every way.

Clearly, the photographer’s eye does not run in the family.

In one, last, desperate attempt to capture something beautiful, I took this one-

And finally I was satisfied with the results.

I could see this large group from afar. The photographer seemed far away, too.  Used a monopod.

I did find an article on 10 Beach Photography Tips (from Australia)  I did try to take care to not get the fine sand and saltwater on my camera but could see where it could happen anyway.

Here is an anonymous group at the beach at night.

Because I didn’t get permission to blog the families I photographed at the beach recently, I am posting Berkeley, enthusiastic for the waves.
