Family members plant flowers, trim grass, pull a few weeds, decorate graves of loved ones with wreaths.

One time Mary and I scrubbed lichen off the granite with our toothbrushes.  I saw a watering can hang from a spigot, a metal pipe in the ground.

Boy Scouts place American flags by white marble veterans’ graves.

I remember when Bill played taps and as the clear notes sounded, the wind kicked up, blew swirls of dust and leaves, the sky got dark. And we all felt  a shivering chill.

Each helmet bears a soldier’s name.

May they all rest in peace and may we never rest until we make peace last.
Thanks for this, Ruth. Too many helmets!

  1. Thanks for this moving tribute for Memorial Day 2017! I remember some of the photos from before….. never out of date …… thanks also for the short video on origin of TAPS……Very special to me!!! LOVE, E

  2. Great post. Remembering my Dad. Would have been 98 yesterday. Served honorably, as did all his brothers, including one lost to war.

  3. This is beautiful post for Memorial Day. The first photo looks like a Norman Rockwell painting. Great job, Ruth.

  4. You always have a wonderful tribute to those that have fallen. Thanks for keeping it alive. It was sad to read an article in the paper this morning that less than 12% of Americans now have, or know, someone serving. Memorial Day now “marks the beginning of summer” and, unfortunately, that’s all many “remember”.

    • Oh dear that is sad. Thanks for looking and taking time to write, Rob. It is just a day for a cookout for many. Big tribute here at Allegheny Cemetery today -bagpipes. Bugles.

  5. Dear Ruth and Mark. Today at the end of Mass the choir sang the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Made me think and pray for not only family and friends but also all people who put themselves in harms way to protect our freedoms. What is it about men and women who give their lives for people who they will never know? God bless their brave souls. Thank you for your photos and comments. Have tosay that the young girlmwatching her father play taps is my favorite. The above note is correct. Norman Rockwell indeed. Open the link below. Maybe you will get tomg

  6. Thank you for sharing, and remembering. May we never forget – and may we not take the sacrifices for granted.

  7. LEST WE FORGET…..Thank you Ruth…..your photos elicit both sadness and gratitude…listen to God Bless America..kind of like that spiritually…the young girl watching her father play taps is still my favorite….Peace and much love to you and yours..
