Why Did the Turkey Cross the Road?

And then thought better of it and reversed direction?.

This morning I was walking with Seniors at Allegheny Cemetery

In addition to the turkey sighting we heard a lot of birds today.

I start the Merlin App and put it in my pocket to record all the birds in the cemetery.

We walked the 2.5 miles and heard the following birds-

American Robin

Northern Cardinal

Blue Jay

Song Sparrow

Chipping Sparrow

Downy Woodpecker

Brown-headed Cowbird

American Goldfinch

Red-winged Blackbird

American Crow

Northern Flicker

Chimney Swift

Mourning Dove

European Starling

  1. That looks like a cool cemetery with some old graves. The turkey seems to be enjoy his stroll through it. We have a cuckoo bird in the orchard across from us. (as well as many other birds)

  2. Looks like the turkey was on a mission to pay his respects. Glad you mentioned the Merlin app. I downloaded it and identified 4 birds within 1 minute, before 6:00 this morning. Fun app

    • Birds of Maine! That’s so cool that you got four birds so quickly. Love that app. Thanks Carrie.

  3. Turkey: “I can tell those old broads are looking at me and are already thinking about Thanksgiving. One of them just activated the Merlin app think. She’ll probably be looking up sausage stuffing soon.” Dc

  4. Wonder what Louis Brown, born in 1783, would think of how the world has evolved to result in your gazing calmly at a turkey near his grave while out for a senior stroll. That would have been food on the loose in his day!
Nice to see the violets in bloom too. Percy Bysshe Shelley, born in 1792, wrote, “The cemetery is an open space among the ruins, covered in winter with violets and daisies. It might make one in love with death, to think that one should be buried in so sweet a place.”
Something to contemplate on your next walk… Kathryn

    • It is a sweet place. So many birds singing. I loved your comment today. I will think on these things on my twice a week walks in this beautiful cemetery.

  5. Wow, that is a lot of birds to hear on your walk. I didn’t know there was such an app, but then again I’m not particularly techy. Those wild turkeys can get vicious. But this one seems to have not really noticed you.
