Tuesday’s Storm Was Intense

Walking in the Allegheny Cemetery this morning, we saw many downed branches and trees. Crews were working on storm cleanup. You could hear the chainsaws.

Those 70+ mph winds did a lot of damage Tuesday night. Some school districts have been closed for 3 days.

Power has been restored to many areas but there are still thousands who do not have power.

It’s a beautiful place to walk

Why Did the Turkey Cross the Road?

And then thought better of it and reversed direction?.

This morning I was walking with Seniors at Allegheny Cemetery

In addition to the turkey sighting we heard a lot of birds today.

I start the Merlin App and put it in my pocket to record all the birds in the cemetery.

We walked the 2.5 miles and heard the following birds-

American Robin

Northern Cardinal

Blue Jay

Song Sparrow

Chipping Sparrow

Downy Woodpecker

Brown-headed Cowbird

American Goldfinch

Red-winged Blackbird

American Crow

Northern Flicker

Chimney Swift

Mourning Dove

European Starling

Soldiers Lot Allegheny Cemetery

Walking in the Allegheny Cemetery this morning, I was able to photograph examples of what I was told about by another member of the walking group.

The government issued gravestones for soldiers in the Soldiers Lot have different shaped tops, depending on whether they were from the North/Union or South/Confederate. This is from the Historical Marker Database page.

The North are round top and the South are pointed.

“The graves in this lot feature standard government-issued marble headstones. Union dead are marked by a rounded-top design approved in 1873, and Confederate dead by pointed top headstones, first used in 1901.

“Erected by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.”

a recessed shield with raised lettering may be from the Spanish American War but this lot is for Civil War soldiers.

Clearly I need to do more research.

“Civil War and Spanish-American War Veterans

There are specific styles of upright marble and granite headstones to mark the graves of Civil War Union and Spanish-American War Veterans. VA will inscribe these historic styles with raised lettering inside a recessed shield. Recessed shield headstones are available in three marble (X) sizes and one granite (Y) size.” From the National Cemetery Administration

Horse Drawn Hearse at Allegheny Cemetery

Driving back from town I went past Allegheny Cemetery. I saw the horses and the white carriage. Their job was finished as the horses were being unhitched and loaded into the open trailer. A horse drawn hearse isn’t a sight you see often in this century. Here is the website for the horses

Reminiscent of Victorian Times

“Incorporated in 1844, the Allegheny Cemetery is the sixth oldest rural cemetery in the United States. It has been expanded over the years and now encompasses 300 acres” Wikipedia

You may have seen Allegheny Cemetery in a movie – It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood or The Cemetery Club

Allegheny Cemetery Walk

Today was  the day to get moving. The skies threatened rain so it would have been so easy to cancel and stay home. I even emailed to ask” is the walk happening rain or shine?”  Turns out they are committed and walk in the rain.

I decided I’d better go walk after telling everyone I was going to take a walk through this historic Allegheny Cemetery sponsored and led by Fitness Instructor Nancy of the Stephen Foster Community (senior) Center.

Now there were two speed walkers who left the other four of us in the dust. Experienced walkers for sure.  How I made it 3.5 miles is amazing. It’s happening again next Tuesday, too. Hmmmmmm

The Speed walkers like pinpoints as they pulled away from the pack.

There were three Fox dens you can see on this little hillside. The seasoned walkers have seen their heads peeking out of the holes.

My second unicyclist sighting in a week.

The Running of the Deer in the Middle of the Day

Allegheny Cemetery. Pittsburgh PA. Saturday afternoon.

I had to pull over and put my flashers on and try to catch a couple of shots.

They ran like lightning. From what or to where I don’t know.

The structure you see is the mausoleum.

I never saw anything like this herd running.  I missed the first group.

I cropped to try to give you a better sense of my experience.

Light and Landscape Show Opening in the Cultural District

Photographer Joey Kennedy‘s solo show, presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, opened tonight at 709 Penn Avenue, directly across from the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts.

You may be familiar with Joey’s elegant wedding photography.

I met him at Silver Eye Center for Photography a few years ago when we were in a Self-Portrait show.  He has always been generous in answering photography questions.

Tonight Steve and I went to the wonderful and well attended opening and bought a print.  The prices on his prints and stretched canvas photos were affordable!  Familiar skylines and bridges in soft fog, Allegheny Cemetery scenes, trees and scupltured angels, the incline- just as the show is titled-  Light and Landscape

Followers who viewed his images made the selections for the exhibition AND the size of the printed photo was determined by which on got the most “likes”.

“Kennedy invites the public to participate in the exhibition’s image selection by visiting his Instagram account, instagram.com/joeykennedyphoto. Each image included in the exhibition is tagged #lightandlandscape.”

The good news is that the show is up until April 12th.
