  1. What an amazing place Ruth. Do you know what they are going to do with it now.
Here places like that have been made into housing, definitely not something I would like to live in, do they hear the screams of past residents?

    • It belongs to Ohio University now and I read there is an art museum there but we didn’t go inside. “
“The Ridges is an approximately 700-acre property owned by Ohio University sitting across the Hocking River from the University’s campus core in Athens. The property was originally opened in the early 1800s as the Athens Lunatic Asylum, and the vacant property was transferred to Ohio University by the state in 1993. Many of the historic buildings at The Ridges have been renovated for a variety of uses by the University, including classrooms, research labs, cultural facilities and more. “

  2. An amazing structure/facility. A lot to maintain I would imagine. It seems a shame not to put it to good use somehow. I agree with Leanne, I don’t think I would want to live there but surely it could used somehow. Veterans facilities perhaps? Dc

  3. I’ve been there! I’m glad the building is being repurposed- giving it a different life than before. The buildings are beautiful but can’t help but think of the horror, pain, and sadness in the history of those walls. Grateful for NAMI to bring dignity to the families and people that have been buried in the numbered graves. Athens NAMI is a great organization and active. They had lots of great online programming during the pandemic. I read they started to Memorial Day honors for the veterans buried that previously did not receive them. Good people in this world.

  4. Very interesting. Beautiful buildings. Very glad they have been repurposed. History is sad.

  5. I likely would find this place depressing given the way individuals were treated back in the day. Yet, I realize mental health was not understood then and treatments were different and often inhumane. When I hear our current director of Health and Human Services state that he wants to “send” individuals with mental health struggles to “farms,” I think of an institution like this. He seems clueless about mental health and many other health issues. Thank you to Alicia T for mentioning NAMI in her comment. Great organization!
