Beloved Duo Since 1969

My sister Mary embroidered this Bert and Ernie pillow when Mark was little. So at least forty some years ago. I found it while going through a big basket of pillows on the third floor. Their faces make me think of Rubber Ducky and Doing the Pigeon.

I’m partial to Ernie. Do you have a favorite? I’ve a knitting pattern for an Ernie sweater but who would wear it?

“Their names are believed to have been drawn from those of two minor characters in the Frank Capra film It’s A Wonderful Life.

According to A&E’s Biography, Bert and Ernie were… the only Muppets to appear in the Sesame Street pilot episode, screen tested to a number of families in July 1969.” -Wikipedia

  1. I love this post. And it’s amazing the trivia I learn on your blog, Ruth. Today I learned that Bert and Ernie’s names are believed to have been drawn from those of two minor characters in the Frank Capra film “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Who-da-thunk-it?

    • Ken it always a pleasure to read your comments on the blog. Thanks for visiting and enjoying the Bert and Ernie information. If you google Bert and Ernie, it will add even more insight into the debate on their relationship as friends. It’s a Wonderful Life film is a family favorite.

  2. That pillow is priceless! I don’t favor one over the other. They both have taught children so much!

  3. Truly we favor Charlie and Laura. Re: the names Bert and Ernie, I picked it up while watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” for who knows how many times. I did a little research and believe their names come from the movie. I like Bert and Ernie. In all honesty I am a Grover fan.

    • Mary did three other pillows and a bell pull but I think her embroidery, or crewel period, was short lived.

  4. Warms my heart to see those faces. We had Bert and Ernie dolls when the kids were little. Longtime gone…garage sale treasures. Together they are my favorite.

    • Thanks Coleen. Yes, I should never have declared a partiality for Ernie. It’s unacceptable.

Thanks for your visit. It's always good to hear you stopped by.
