When I told Steve I went to Morningside neighborhood this morning, to photograph the demolishing of St. Raphael’s school today, he told me that Gene Kelly went to grade school here.

There is something wrong about schools being pulled down, I hope it is happening because they are building a new one.
Unfortunately that is not the case, Leanne. Thank you for your visit and thoughtful comment today.
This is so sad.
I agree with you.
There was an old brick school across the street from my grandparents. My aunts attended there. They were going to knock it down, but now they turned it into a seniors home. Thank heaven.
That was good repurposing for sure.
wow gene kelly wnet here – and I wonder about the mant others.
Also, I often wonder what was the deciding factor to TEAR DOWN as opposed to refurbish – hmmm
The school had been closed due to lack of enrollment. Then there’s the asbestos they mention in the article linked. I don’t really know, Yvette.
Famous former pupils couldn’t save it
The one famous Pittsburgher I know who attended, passed in 1996.
Thanks for update
Kelly was such a star. It’s sad his grade school is coming down.
❤️thanks for always leaving a good word, Sue.
Gene Kelly Lived in Point Breeze Remember the song with the name of a street in it ? He really lived there. An older friend of mine from way back lived next door. They played in Frick Park. The number in the song is one house off from his. Sorry about the school.
Lots of beautiful memories in that school, sad to see it demolished.
Thanks for writing today, Carrie. .
Very sad.

I went to Pitt, and I remember that there is a plaque honoring Gene Kelly at the University of Pittsburgh, his alma mater. The plaque is located outside the William Pitt Union. Additionally, the university’s Department of Theatre Arts has a Kelly Lobby, dedicated in his name.
As of there’s Kelly/Strayhorn theatre here in East Liberty. Thanks Ken.
