When I moved to Pittsburgh in 1989 I didn’t know what a Pierogies was let alone taste one!
I heard it was dough with potato inside ( yes, there are other fillings ) and at the time the description didn’t appeal to me.
Things have changed.
One year I made them from scratch at Christmas but now buy them from the Polish deli or a church in Lent or the freezer case at the market. If you feel ambitious here is a recipe .
I’ve at least four blog posts tagged Pierogies prepared in various ways.

I never heard of them until I came to Pittsburgh. I’ve only had them a couple of time. I just bought some frozen ones from a friend for a fund raiser at a local school. Sauerkraut ones sounded good.
I’d like to try them.
Perogies are my comfort food as I was raised on them. I use my mom’s recipe but they are never as good as hers were. She often filled them with cottage cheese which I love. Your photo lks very much like hers. Now I’m hungry. xo
You might be rolling up your sleeves and getting out your mom’s recipe!
I really like them too. I just buy the frozen ones from the grocery but now may look to see if we have a place that makes them fresh. Good post. dc
I bet you can find a place.
I do like perigees. They remind me of a Jewish dish called kreplach. Different shape same idea.
Thanks Sue. So different cultures have stuffed dough don’t they?
There is a small store in etna called COP OUT that makes them. Many different kinds. You can buy them frozen or warm. Only open a few days a week. GN
Good to know. Thank you
Yum! We love them. Some churches in our area make them to sell. And I have a friend who makes them from her mother-in-law’s old recipe.
I don’t think I’ll make them but I definitely hope to try them gcr
I love the sweet cabbage ones! One year for Christmas, Jeremy’s grandma Biddy gifted me a polish cookbook with some pierogis presses. Made them homemade but it’s easier just using your hands and sealing with your fingers or fork.
What a wonderful gift.
I’ve never had one; should I find myself in PA will definitely have to try them!
They are probably in your freezer case. Potato and cheese a favorite. Be sure to fry up in some butter and onions.
