It’s Been Done but I Found One on Monday

A Ghost sign.

One time I tried to do a Faded Friday Signage theme. It didn’t last long.

But I saw this one Monday morning on Penn Ave. in the Strip District.

There was already a show of Pittsburgh Ghost Signs in 2014. I missed it. Kelly Bogel was the photographer.

I always wondered why we like these things,” said Professor Will Zavala, “I think it’s because they are a mystery. They’re a mystery because their literal meaning is sometimes a puzzle, sometimes they’re advertising products, for the most part, that don’t even exist anymore for companies that aren’t around, even though they must have been household names at the time.”

Here’s one I found years ago

  1. I always love these buildings. I like to get lost in thinking how has walked past them. I too am here. I dream of painting a flower mural on these walls.

  2. These are fascinating. Evidence of a time gone by. Ghost signs. They create a vision in my mind of a the way life once was. Something I must have seen in a movie. This is a cool post today, Ruth.

  3. I look at these and reminisce about the content and the time period. The huge Mail Pouch signs painted on the side of a barn are one example. This may sound morbid but I do the same when walking through a cemetery. I used to walk through St. Mary’s Cemetery to and from work. I would read the date on the older tombstones and envision what the person’s world was like at the time.

  4. I like them also and will now make a point to be looking for them. Most of them appear in cities, downtown I’m guessing and not much chance of finding anything here. Maybe as I drive thru some old small towns going across the state. dc

  5. I love seeing these, you can’t help but think of what it was like in the past. I’ll be looking for these now. Thanks for sharing these photos.

  6. I enjoy looking at ghost signs. I first saw them in Chicago when I was a kid, so they hold a large nostalgia component for me as well.
