Presidents’ Day Party Supplies in the Strip District- Pittsburgh PA

After Christmas I was in the Strip District with Matthew and Natalya. We had coffee at La Prima and lunch at Sunseri’s.  A little window shopping, popped into the kitchen store and then Wholey’s to see the fish.

One “must-see” store is Mike Feinberg’s on Penn Ave.  Right now you can stock up on Leprauchan supplies.  Or Mardi Gras masks and beads.

You name it- they have it.  Postcards and old school candy, too.

This is what we saw up front. Presidents’ Day supplies. There were tons of New Year’s hats and horns, pre-packaged party supplies for any number of guests.

What We Lose When They Raze this Entire Block

The facades were to be restored and preserved but looks like they’re slated for the wrecking ball.

Demolition not preservation.

What happened to the Historic Commission plan to preserve the facades?

We’ve seen lots of development lately and that’s not all bad but there sure are a lot of BOXES going up and the photographs show what we will lose when they raze this entire block.

East Liberty PA.  Penn Avenue.  The same block as Zeke’s Cafe with the super coffee beans.  Spinet Piano Sign

It’s always expensive to restore, true. But what a loss of character for the city.   Lester Betsy Ross Spinets were popular instruments.

Okay I can see this former PNC bank building now empty going but what about the character and history of the rest of the buildings?

Bagpiper on Penn Avenue, Saturday Night

Unexpected bagpipe music emanating from Penn Avenue near the Car Park, on our way to the Fireworks Night at PNC Park-

Steve pulled over to the curb.  I got out of the car.  Placed a bill in her case on the walk and asked if it would be all right to take a photo.  She nodded.

A student at Carnegie Mellon University, piping for the Tartans, practicing, playing cool music for downtown Pittsburgh

AND imprinted on her card-

Bagpiping for Western Pennsylvania, (and doing a great job of it, too)

and at the bottom-  Weddings, Funerals, Military Functions, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Social Events, Group and Individual Instruction.  Solo and Band Prizes -US Canada and Scotland   I believe it!

….. Her name is Liz Cherry and she is skilled in the way of the pipes!

A Steelers Fan’s Nod to the Packers

We love our Steelers, win or lose. Here’s some Pittsburgh cheese to acknowledge your win, Packers fans and dear friends! (Rob you were right.)   I made Haluski, Pierogies and Kielbasa but no one felt like eating here.       Have to post now and get to bed cause I’m driving back to the Burgh for school in the morning, YIKES! We had a fun time together but watching the superbowl was so stressful.   Kids dropped off to sleep one by one.
