The first is a Class Banquet menu from my Grandmother’s 1906 Yearbook and the second menu and all the recipes from an old cookbook I dusted off. Its date was 1913.

How wonderful!
This is such a fascinating window into the past. It raises many questions for me. What is a stuffed tomato salad? How does one make buttered beets? What are Longbranch Wafers? Why has veal pot pie disappeared from our menus? Today’s post really made me think. It really is a fascinating window into the past.
I want to know what an asparagus pattie is?? Never heard of that. AND… my mom LOVED piccalilli on saltines so the jar was a staple in our refrigerator. Not on my list…..
Just love the word piccallil but no desire to prepare or consume it
I think it’s great that you have all of these old remembrances.
They are interesting to read and think about.
Do you think a potato puff is really a tator tot? It’s always fun to look through past food lists and recipes. Someday I’d like to host a throwback potluck.
Here’s a recipe. Made with mashed potatoes https://thecookingjar.com/mashed-potato-puffs/
I love old menus, recipes and cookbooks – and piccalilli!
What is a mock cherry pie?
