Birthday T-Shirt Quilt a Hit!

Happy Birthday Mark

Thanks to FedEx, the Pittsburgh themed T-shirt quilt arrived this afternoon. Right in time to celebrate my son Mark’s birthday on the 26th. Happy Birthday Mark.

I knew you’d love it! I was excited when you FaceTimed me as you opened it up. And of course your second call, showing me how Henry the Airedale was sniffing the quilt, looking for grandma.

My granddaughter Maura took the photo of her Dad with his birthday gift. Thanks for sending it Maura.

I took the shirts Mark gave to me and added a few so it was a row longer, scouting a thrift-shop, the closet here in my home, and ebay for the vintage Gateway Clipper T-shirt, where Mark worked when he was in high school.

I learned how to back the shirts with interfacing so they were flat and stable when they were sewed together. Thanks to Lisa S of Storm Sew for her tutorial and for her professional long-arm quilting services. Lisa can create a t-shirt quilt from start to finish, or complete your own sewing efforts like she did for mine. The quilting pattern was called Broken Glass. As soon as I finished handstitching the binding, I boxed it and drove to the main FedEx shipping center. He received it less than 24 hours later.

Mazeroski in the Snow

Read a tip to revisit something you’ve already photographed, but return in another season or different time of day. After photographing Heinz Field the other day before the AFC game I swung by the Bill Mazeroski statue above the Allegheny River and shot him running into home plate, surrounded by snow.  Some of you may remember my photographing the statue unveiling. No people in this shot.  I had dinner with my friend  Sue R. who is  a  serious fan and a member of the Lady Bucs Club.  She has her tickets to go to Bradenton for Spring Training games.  I told her about shooting the statue in the snow and she said she was looking forward to seeing him. Susan Wagner is the sculptor of this incredible statue.

50th Anniversary at Forbes Wall in Oakland- October 13th- 1 PM

The radio will be playing the game.  Starts at 1 and the home run hit by Mazeroski will play at 3:36 PM.  Lots of the team will be there.  My friend Sue will help interview and point out players for a friend who is filming the occasion. Very exciting, And Happy Birthday to Marianne who was at the game with her Uncle Bobo in 1960.  Learned at the Rick Sebak lecture that no beer was sold inside the ball park at that time. You could buy it outside and bring it in. So not the actual spot of the wall where  the home run went over but a piece of the wall to commemorate the game.(click for details)

Gateway Clipper Ship on Allegheny River- City of Pittsburgh at Dusk

A beautiful night at the Pirates Game with good friends.  And the Bucs won (8-18-09). When the Gateway Clipper ship cruised by,  I remembered driving Mark to the wharf and how he used to work, answering calls to book cruises, take the reservations, sell  wine and cheese packages.  A nice light, just before dark.
