My First Loaf of Sourdough

A friend at exercise class gave me sourdough starter and a basic recipe. I learned why she advised don’t use tap water. Filtered or Spring water. The chlorine in the city water can kill the yeast (or at least slow it down.)

I’ve been feeding the starter refrigerating it when I’d leave town, take it back out and feed it again and was planning to bake sourdough bread.

Today was the day. I used a ln enameled cast iron bread baker that Jen S and I bought from Aldi last year.

Putting it into a handmade bread bag.

I took a book out of the library through the Libby App online and renewed it tonight.

This video was a good resource

  1. Beautiful sourdough, great job Ruth. I’ve got a sourdough starter, I’ve had going since 11/9/2019. We love it. I ordered it from King Arthur Flour. I’ve made sourdough chocolate cake and it was delicious.

    • I will have to investigate that cake. Sounds intriguing. Wow you’ve kept that going a long time. Do you bake every week?

      • I bake every 2 to 3 weeks, The starter I had before this one, I kept going for 5 years. It’s addicting once you start. I believe I used the sourdough chocolate cake recipe from King Arthurs’s website. That was the best chocolate cake I’ve ever had, so moist and flavorful. I am going to dry sourdough crackers with the discard. I’ll keep you posted.

  2. Looks like it turned out well Ruth. I’ve been playing around with sourdough for a few years now, love the flavour. I do use tap water, but I always boil it first. I haven’t had any problems, but out water could be different.

    • We had chlorine in our water I hear. I think if it’s left out 24 hours the chlorine dissipates but I’m trying to give it the best possible chance. Yes it’s a delicious flavor. You feel like you’re really living well, eating it😂

Thanks for your visit. It's always good to hear you stopped by.
