The Story of the Lost Fingerless Mitt

A couple of weeks ago I was out shoveling the sidewalk.

I wore the pair of fingerless mitts over some gloves. When I came inside the house I was missing one. Went outside and dug around but no luck.

And then a couple of days ago I saw something hanging from a twig on the tree out front.

Some kind passerby put my mitt in the tree
Today I was wearing the reunited pair and realized the thumb was not long enough

I had more of the Rare Breed Manx Loaghtan yarn from the Isle of Man click on the name of the breed and see the multi horned sheep.

From the sheep the Vikings left behind©️

These sheep were almost extinct but click link for how they saved the sheep from Viking times. Yarn available

So I picked up stitches with my double point needles and extended the thumbs

Much toastier. Can’t have a chilly thumb.

Little Knit Cactus

When you get a request from your granddaughter for a knitted item, you try to oblige. Within reason of course. -I’m thinking “a hat, mittens, a scarf……”

“Could you make me a knitted cactus?” Anna asked.

Huh?

I didn’t know there was such a thing. Thanks to Pinterest spreading the word, succulents, knitted, crocheted and stitched are a trend.

Mine looks different from the pattern by Lucille Randall. (which is free on Ravelry)

Might need more stuffing.  Also I need my friend Donna or FF Marlene to help crochet a better flower.  I followed the directions but it seems knitting is my stronger skill for sure.

When I started.  I used DPNs size one.  When I was telling my knitting friend, I had a flashback to a knit cactus I saw a couple of years ago at Hill Country Weavers in Austin, Texas. We were in line to check out and there it sat. Never thought another thing about it until now and I’d taken a quick phone photo.

Thanks for the Dream in Color Handpainted yarn, Molly. AND for finding that skein of Kidsilk Haze in the Jelly color.  Unbelievable.

Mom, You Should Knit a Hat to Match Your Glasses

Okay Matthew. Good idea.
Here it is – thanks for the inspiration.

Sure beats my tired brown hat from last year.

And thanks to Molly for the Noro Kuryeon yarn and I used a double strand as the pattern called for bulky yarn.

This is the Handspun Ribbed Hat patternHandspun Ribbed Hat. I knit quite a few of these hats for Christmas with Rowan Undyed Chunky yarn, the color of the breed of sheep. Suffolk and Black Welsh.

(Adjustment– I knit it to 11″ so there is a nice length to fold up and it’s double over the ears ) and I use a size 9 circular needle 16″ length.

Warm Ups and Knitting at the Swim Meet Sunday

The day started at the Ohio State University McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

I got there close to 6:30 AM Sunday. The younger grandchildren were swimming in the morning and the two older were swimming in the afternoon.

All the rest of the family got home at 8:30 PM!.  I had to head back to Pittsburgh around 1 as snow was predicted and it’s best to drive in daylight.

There were so many swimmers in the pool at once. How they don’t bump into one another is amazing to me.
