Our Family Friend Wrote a Book

Our family friend Rob Bard has written an amusing book titled My Dog Ate My Bird . When I told my son Mark about Rob’s book he said, “I remember that!”

You might remember a post featuring Rob when he was judging pie.

Rob wrote then- On Saturday is the Amateur Division and these are the best.  These pies are made by people like you and me.  They are made with love and they are truly your “homemade” pies.  I love judging that day.  With over 900 pies entered, judges are divided up and we sample just a certain type of pie.  There are 18 categories.  I try to always select the cherry pie, my favorite.  The most pies I have ever judged was 28 different cherry pies over 2 days.

 Sunday is the Professional Division and these are just that.  This category are those individuals that have “made a living” selling pies and the professional pastry chefs.

I have met some nice people along the way. Pie has a way of bringing people together.

Rob’s also been featured in the blog’s Gallery of Veterans. We met him when he was stationed at Ft. Knox Kentucky and our eldest sons were classmates in elementary school.

Rob this post is for you. Rob is a certified Pie Judge. Here’s a post of National Pie day in January 2012. Sorry I missed National Day Pie Day this year but now it’s Pi Day 3.14.

Did you know you can order Pi Day sock yarn? maybe for next year Fibernymph Dyeworks says “ all of our Pi Day colorways, the striping pattern is based on the numeric sequence of pi – 3.141592…, which is a non-repeating number. Thus, the stripe sequence does not repeat within the skein, and you will not be able to get a matching pair of socks (or anything) from a single skein. But if you’re a math geek, that’s part of the fun! We include a stitch marker affixed to the beginning of the sequence”

Ornament Sparks Memories

I received the loveliest email from friends Rob and Mary in Florida. Their tree was up and decorated and they were talking about where different ornaments came from. Rob sent me this photo he took of a Santa I gave them years ago when we all lived in Kentucky and our boys were in school together. Rob has been featured as a pie judge*and also in the gallery of veterans I post annually. Thank you for writing and sending the photo. ❤️

Thinking About Pie on National Pie Day

I emailed my friend Rob to see if he had any updates for National Pie Day this year.  He is the only pie judge I know. Official, that is.

Just a year ago he was guest blogger with the National Pie Day post.  When I went to retrieve the post and his photos with Willard Scott and Keegan Gerhard, I remembered how a fellow blogger helped me out that day.  No visible pictures had posted when I published the guest blog, just blue boxes with question marks.  I saw them on my computer but no one else could see them on theirs!

Thanks to the expertise of Chicago John from the Bartolini Kitchens Blog we were able to see Rob’s photos last year.

And although I knew it was National Pie Day today, you see what I came up with this year?

The idea of pie.  The possibility of pie.  Contemplating the making of pie.

What’s available in the larder?

A lone can of pumpkin?

A few apples for school lunch?

Tons of citrus, some grapes.  There are raisins in the fridge but raisin pie has zero appeal to me.

So here’s my offering, Rob.

A pretty pie plate in the afternoon sun and the mere suggestion of a pie to be created. Great for the calorie count, if one were so inclined.
