Dried Allium Inside a Glass Globe

 

My artist friend J gave me  a dozen stems of dried Allium from her garden.

(“Allium species are herbaceous perennials with flowers produced on scapes.”)  you know the family- onion, garlic, chives and leek……)

J knew that they’d be great for pictures.

The kids enjoyed arranging them and taking photos of the outer space orbs.

After school I tried putting one into a glass globe my neighbors had given me (minus the  crazy centerpiece, which has since been trashed).

The top flower had broken off from the stem but didn’t take away from the dried flower end.

The round glass globe creates some interesting effects in the images.  I see that you need to plant bulbs if you want Allium in your garden next Spring.

I’d always wondered what they were when I saw the tall purple alien- looking flowers.

Some of the flowers were gigantic.  The stems are called scapes.

Guest Blogger’s Response to Yesterday’s Waiting for Spring Post

Okay Aunt Bobbie (the one who gave Anna the Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls).  Bobbie  saw my almost Spring post of the flowering pear trees and then sent me a photo for the blog today.  YIKES!

I was so hopeful.  Just when I was thinking of how the earth will warm up and the buds and blossoms will burst. I was counting the days until Spring, ready for the winter to be OVER!

I love it when someone is inspired by my photos on the blog, though. Even if it is a snow photos.  Well more that just any snow photo.

21 inches of snow in Kansas City in a week!!!

(Chicago John, this one is for YOU, too!)  For everyone shoveling and plowing and hopeful that it will just all go away….and SOON.

(Rob, you must be so glad you moved out of Northern Illinois to Florida this year.  Kristin, how was Hawaii?   Sue, you enjoying Spring training in Bradenton?)

After seeing your blog I wanted to share these photos.  The first photo is from a traffic cam showing my “old” office in the background and then I immediately went out and shot (with my trusty iPhone) the photo out our back yard, probably less than 2 minutes apart.  I sent these back to my old office staff just to show them the “real reason” I moved from Northern Illinois…just in case someone really needed proof.  Needless to say I got varied comments.  Thanks again for challenging all to see life through “a different lens”.

Thinking About Pie on National Pie Day

I emailed my friend Rob to see if he had any updates for National Pie Day this year.  He is the only pie judge I know. Official, that is.

Just a year ago he was guest blogger with the National Pie Day post.  When I went to retrieve the post and his photos with Willard Scott and Keegan Gerhard, I remembered how a fellow blogger helped me out that day.  No visible pictures had posted when I published the guest blog, just blue boxes with question marks.  I saw them on my computer but no one else could see them on theirs!

Thanks to the expertise of Chicago John from the Bartolini Kitchens Blog we were able to see Rob’s photos last year.

And although I knew it was National Pie Day today, you see what I came up with this year?

The idea of pie.  The possibility of pie.  Contemplating the making of pie.

What’s available in the larder?

A lone can of pumpkin?

A few apples for school lunch?

Tons of citrus, some grapes.  There are raisins in the fridge but raisin pie has zero appeal to me.

So here’s my offering, Rob.

A pretty pie plate in the afternoon sun and the mere suggestion of a pie to be created. Great for the calorie count, if one were so inclined.
