A Bold Jumping Spider on a Red Pepper Plant

I’d just walked out of Whole Foods and this huge hairy spider with big green eyes got my attention. There were flats of vegetable plants for sale. My neighbor stopped by my front porch and she was able to identify the type of spider. I actually videoed inadvertently just as it jumped. Hanging by a thread. Says they don’t build webs.    Phidippus audax

I noticed how the exact same leaf looks differently as the light and angle change.

Simple Halloween Decor

There are wild and elaborate decorations around town and outside of town, but here are a few simple ones.

There are ersatz graveyards in people’s front yards, witches flying in trees, skeletons and cobwebs on mailboxes and Halloween light strung on front porches.

People are going all out.   A real Halloween Decoration Extravaganza.

These are a few simple decorations in Pittsburgh and from my sister Mary in Brooklyn NY.

Here’s a giant spider on the South Side of Pittsburgh

How do you feel about spiders?

Found under the kids’ sandbox when cleaned out on Sunday.  Not sure if it is a biting spider or not.  I had no idea there were so many types of spiders in the world.

Looked at some photos online but started to feel confused.  Hope someone can tell what kind of a spider he is and if we should worry he is making his home underneath the sandbox.

Anyone have a clue?

I remember reading the kids a book when they were little  –Be Nice To Spiders.

Vinyl 45’s in Paper Sleeves with Plastic Adapter

How old do you have to be to remember what 45rpm means?   I had a carrying case for this size record.   Down at Excuses again, SouthSide, where King Cobra Blues plays the first Friday of the month.   I saw this scene-   a guy named John had two old 45’s and was asking Don Hollowood to sign them during the band’s break.  I asked if I could photograph the 45’s.  He was worried I didn’t have a flash but I managed.  John was explaining to me how there was an A side and a B side to a 45.  It was dark in the bar.  I had about twenty years on him and knew about the A and B side but he said he was used to explaining the concept to his nieces.  So the rare 45’s of the band Bon Ton Roulet were Black Diamond(A) and You Excite Me Daddy(B) and the other was Love and War (A) and They Call Us Bon Ton Roulet(B).  Check out the MTV Basement Tapes, hosted by Frank Zappa, see the early music video featuring Pittsburgh Band Bon Ton Roulet singing Love and War. John said he bought them at Sunny Jim’s in Emsworth. There is one copy of Black Diamond on Amazon. The plastic insert 45rpm  adapter is called a spider.

Spider Traps Stink Bug

Not sure if your part of the world is infested with these undesirable STINK BUGS but they are trying to get in every window and crack around here.  I looked at what I thought was a giant spider and he is good sized, hanging in a web out on the columns on the porch, but there he was grabbing onto one of those armor plated stink bugs.   When the kids were small we’d read a book from the library called  Be Nice to Spiders by Margaret Bloy Graham. Tonight’s shot- they were both outside. I left them alone. But a stinkbug seems like a poor choice for a meal.

Another one for the Nature scrapbook. I like the shadow from the porch light.
