I had the honor of capturing her author photo which now graces the back cover of her just published poetry book.

“Diane Kerr mentors poets through the Madwomen in the Attic Creative Writing Program at Carlow University and is the author of the collection, Butterfly. Her work has appeared in the Alaska Quarterly Review, Mississippi Review, and Pearl, among others. She holds an MFA from the Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. Kerr’s forthcoming Perigee follows a speaker’s emotional reckoning with a traumatic secret she felt pressured to keep during her girlhood. In varied lyric narratives, these poems reinforce that shock and suffering have no statute of limitations.”

You always ask if there is anything you can do…….

A good friend passed early Wednesday morning. You always ask if there is anything you can do…..

She was a loving mother, a devoted sister, an excellent teacher, a strong woman, a heartfelt writer and a steadfast partner. An advocate for so many students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Inspiring thousands. A Madwoman writer at Carlow University.

I can picture her signing Go Tell it on the Mountain at a Christmas Choir Concert

Reading her poetry at Poe*Art, touching us with her words.

Playing music to motivate the scores of teachers who became students every summer in The Western Pennsylvania Writing Project at the University of Pittsburgh.

Another friend who taught with her for a couple of years remembers her playing Rocky’s Theme to get the students geared up for testing. The same friend said Cj always made lemonade when life handed her lemons. So true.

Here is another song she’d play for her students and sign with them.

The plea for help with medical expenses is now compounded by the additional need for Funeral/Memorial costs. If you’ve ever received a bill in the mail after someone has passed you’ll understand why I am getting this request out to the world. Cj was always supportive of my blog efforts and an avid follower.

John Kane/Robert Qualters Paintings at Carlow University Art Gallery

KANE/QUALTERS: MY PITTSBURGH Sept 5- November 10. 2017

Thursday evening Steve and I drove to Carlow University Art Gallery to see this exhibit. My friend R told me about the reception when I had breakfast with her earlier in the day. There will be an artist’s talk on Tuesday September 19 at 4 p.m. Click here for a link to the Carlow University Art Gallery page for more information

Steve and I met the artist Robert Qualters and saw his work, alongside the paintings of John Kane (1860-1934)

Mr. Qualters has donated two paintings to the University For John Kane and Big Self-Portrait. (He is on the left below)

“MY PITTSBURGH focuses on the Pittsburgh subjects of two iconic artists, giving special emphasis to the influence that Kane’s work had on Qualters’ paintings”

There were four John Kane paintings, one Mount Mercy was donated in 2001 to the University by Mrs. Elsie Hillman. The other three were on loan from the Hillman Foundation Art Collection

Meet the Man Who Made Copies of the Film Quart Jar Poet

Meet Dino Pandolfo who graciously consented to be part of my People at Work Series. He has a full recording studio and can create multiple copies of DVDs and CDs(see below) right here in Ingram a West End neighborhood in Pittsburgh.

The Quart Jar Poet: Dorothy Holley is a film I made in 2005. Dorothy was a good friend to me- an encourager. Dorothy Holley-Poet, Friend

Dino created the copies to be used as a fundraiser for Madwomen in the Attic-he was a pleasure to work with and they look wonderful. He even carted the boxes to my car.

A Fourth-Light

The theme for the photo challenge this week was Half-light. I’m back in the Burgh after a Spring vacation to New York City and Ohio.

By the time I left the University Commons, I missed the half-light.

It was almost dark.

I titled this series a fourth-light.

I like the dark blue sky backdrop for a few of Pittsburgh’s iconic structures.

I’d enjoyed my friend Cj’s poetry reading at Carlow U. Tuesday night.

Celebration of the Life of Christina Murdock — Tess created this bouquet for Joan when she hosted Book Club. Christina was a member of Book Club, too.

Christina Murdock was awarded the 2006 Sara Henderson Hay Prize from The Pittsburgh Quarterly Online, and her writing has been published in The 10^th Floor Review, Collision, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Voices from the Attic and Pittsburgh CityPaper. She died in April just one week before her 30th birthday and is survived by her husband, Terry, and daughter, Sophia. A tribute reading of her work will be held at 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Sept. 18 at Kresge Theater, Carlow University. Free and open to the public. Sales of her book, Burying the Body,($12.95) will benefit a scholarship fund for her daughter. Sponsored by Madwomen in the Attic, a creative writing group for women @ Carlow University.
