Nutcracker Suite on a Snowy Day

The Columbus City Ballet School Production- Saturday December 9th

Maura was in two dances  The Tea Dance and The Russian Dance.  A couple  of the moms helped me out as Maura’s mom was with her siblings at a swim meet.  Suzanne watched her while I ran to get lunch after the morning dress rehearsal and I’d left the makeup bag on the kitchen counter so Shelly added the finishing touches to Maura’s stage look.

It’s Ballet Recital Season

It’s Ballet Recital Season.  Under the direction of Shirlee Wu, Columbus City Ballet School held their recital Sunday afternoon at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware.  Mark and Erika’s youngest Maura, has been practicing for months and it was  lot of fun to see her as a villager in an excerpt from Coppélia

Photography was allowed at the morning dress rehearsal.

Missing Degas by a Day

Dance Dance Dance
The Dancers. All those ballerinas. I had a framed print on my childhood wall.
I’m visiting my sister but Wednesday we’re headed to family in Ohio.
On Monday at MOMA, I read signs of the Edgar Degas exhibit which previews the day we leave the city-glimpses of what I’d miss were represented in the gift shop.

Degas dancers on bookmarks, stationery, prints to be framed, journals, magnets, a children’s book. Not a mug in sight!

The entrance to the exhibit, cordoned off until tomorrow for members.

After the Nutcracker at the Ohio Statehouse

Right from school, I drove the 200 miles to Columbus and made it in time to attend the Nutcracker with the family.

We crossed the street after the performance and Maura and her other grandmother and I  sat on a bench while the rest of the family walked around the Statehouseseeing the sites.  We were waiting for the line to the parking lot to subside.

We asked Maura which part was her favorite. (“the kids doing the back handsprings” said Anna and Maura said “Me, too.”)

Maura’s response to the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Dance of the Flowers took place right on the sidewalk..

I was wishing I’d brought my camera but had to do with the iPhone.

Oh, did I mention that it was about 55 degrees. Felt like a Spring evening with a chill wind.

Three More Days of the One-Woman Show, REMAINS, at the New Hazlett Theatre, North Side

My friend R sent me an article from the Pittsburgh Post- Gazette  by Sara Bauknecht, about “Remains”, a one-woman show  playing at The New Hazlett Theater on the North Side – Thought I might be interested in going. I read the part about going through boxes of memories and stuff from one’s parents and it piqued my interest.

You can read more about the star of the show, Beth Corning, at her blog

“This year’s offering is a one-woman show (starring Beth Corning ) made with Tony Award-winning choreographer/performer Dominique Serrand, co-artistic director of Minneapolis-based The Moving Company.”

and before you know it,  R went online and  bought us tickets.  I’m so glad she did.  It was excellent.  Powerful.  Graceful. Moving.  Evocative.

And it’s there for just 3 more days!!   If you live in Pittsburgh, you should make a plan to go this weekend.

We went to the performance Thursday night and stayed for the Talk-Back afterwards.

Beth Corning asked the audience if we might Tweet, Facebook and tell friends about “Remains” – (a Glue Factory Project) which is playing Friday June 7,

Sat June 8th and a Sunday Matinee at 2 (June 9th) when you pay what you can for admission.

R and I went to the lobby and then I wondered out loud how to blog about it and R suggested I ask to take a photo of Beth.  So we turned around and went back and I took a photo with my iPhone.

A nice man, Alex showed me how to take a panorama with my new iPhone  in the theater lobby and showed me where to stand in the corner.  A bit dark but fun. Thanks Alex

We headed to Market Square to La Cucina Flegrea where the kitchen had closed but served us each a bowl of delicious minestrone and some bread.

And if you don’t live in Pittsburgh, you could invite Beth and Dominique to come to your city. Maybe they will consider a tour!  The show’s theme is personal and universal simultaneously.

You know you make me wanna (Shout!), Kick my heels up and (Shout!)

“Throw my hands up and (Shout!)”

SHOUT- Originally recorded by the Isley Brothers in 1959- Here Nancy and friend Eric kick up their heels at Lauren and Jesse’s wedding in Alexandria, PA. It was fun to catch them mid-air.

(I know, the woman’s legs under Eric confuse the photo but I liked the effort and energy of their enthusiastic dancing)
