Elegant and Delicious: Spoon

A classy restaurant we’ve driven by on a daily basis but never stopped to dine.

Celebrating 19 years- our unanniversary- a solid friendship and steadfast companionship, not sure where all that time has gone but there we were in East Liberty and we headed to SPOON.

What we ate-   the service was excellent and even though we weren’t ordering up the Foie Gras or the Tasting Menu or a Magnum of Champagne, they treated us hospitably and did not make us feel out of place as we were “walk-ins” and didn’t have reservations which would be a good idea for future visits.

Breadbasket: warm cream cheese chive biscuits/baguette and warm muffins

garden vegetable baby mix green salad: Golden Harvest Farm baby mix greens, fresh garden vegetables, champagne vinaigrette

Spoon burger:  8 oz. Kobe beef, aged white cheddar cheese, parmesan + herb fries, challah bun

Too full for the desserts but they sounded wonderful.

Saturday Night at Teppanyaki Kyoto Restaurant

Friday night we made a reservation at the Teppanyaki Kyota Restaurant for Saturday.  Tonight Steve and I  walked down the hill to the new Japanese Restaurant and it’s 34 degrees outside so the Hot Miso soup filled with onions was a welcome beginning.  I think I was hungry and chilled so didn’t get that photo!  Just ate it heartily.  Next we shared a House Salad with Mango Mint dressing and a Sapporo beer to accompany the meal.  Grilled Pork with Ginger and Onions and then Yaki Soba a Japanese Noodle Dish with Shrimp. After those dishes we ate a Yaki Onigiri (Grilled Rice Ball). The wife of the owner/chef explained how to put it between the seaweed leaves and eat it.  Pickled radish was on the side.  The cooking shown in the slideshow is Okonomi Yaki- a Japanese Pancake.

We finished with a square of Green Tea Cheesecake for dessert. Light and not too sweet.  And then a very chilly hike back up the hill to home.  Everything is cooked to order just for you. Perfectly. All fresh ingredients prepared with attention to detail.

And a word from the Chef off their Facebook page as he doesn’t want to turn customers away but also wants to make the customers in the restaurant happy-

I finally tell you that I decided the date to soft-open Teppanyaki Kyoto restaurant. It is January 15th. That is this coming SUNDAY. Only counter seats. Because of new style of restaurant in Pittsburgh, we take only reservation for beginning of a few months. Please CALL me to make a reservation. Phone nunber is 412 441 1610.

I am looking forward seeing you soon.

Do call and make a reservation. The food is delicious and Bryant Street is enhanced by the presence of another  excellent  restaurant!   We had a good time and a wonderful meal.

A Place to Get Food- #2 in a Series- Wenatchee, WA

Wenatchee, WA.  This photo is now hanging over my bed as of last week.  Not sure how my dreams will be affected.  I like the colors. Full name is EZ’s Burger Deluxe on Wenatchee Ave.  I was visiting my brother in Okanogan, WA.  Shot it from the parking lot across the street.

Places to Get Food- #1 in a Series- Seaside, Florida

Another little project I started a few years back.  This one is in Seaside Florida.  Not a WordPress challenge, but my own. I love the table and two chairs.

And thanks for taking time to vote- 330+ blog views on Monday- Poll results- 12 people voted for Octopus photo and 8 voted for the Sunflower Seed Roll.

Summer Salad Lunch- Spinach, Raspberries, Gorgonzola, Pine Nuts and Red Onion

What else can I say?  It was fresh and delicious and the berries, cheese and nuts were a wonderful combination.  Pine nuts are so pricey these days.

At the Italian store today pine nuts were $19.95 a pound!

We drove over to Labriola’s on Freeport Road and I bought some provisions for supper on the front porch for another friend. Romano chicken, tomato/fresh mozzarella salad, lettuce, Vietnamese Spring Rolls from Tram’s on Penn (Thanks Steve) with a peanut or chili sauce on the side, and Breadworks Rustic Italian bread and Sour Cherry Pie from Patty’s Farm Market for dessert.  That’s the stand where I bought a dozen or more pies when Mark and Erika got married 9 years ago and I had the rehearsal dinner in the backyard.

My friend R and I caught up over a refreshing lunch outside the Phipps Conservatory.  Lemonade to drink.

After lunch there was a Farmer’s Market on the front lawn and there were some incredibly pushy customers that surprised me.  I guess if there are only 8 boxes of blueberries, you have to get right in there and grab them or they are GONE! There were lovely organic beets and garlic scrapes and blackberries and tomatoes.  Basil and dill scented the air of one table as I waited my turn.  R bought some ripe peaches to make peach ice cream. I used to make a peach ice cream out of Joy of Cooking when I was married in ’74 as my SIL gave us a fancy ice cream maker ( it needed rock salt!) and was electric.  If you need some ice cream recipes here is a link I found.  I should go downstairs and retrieve the Joy of Cooking recipe.

Piccolo Forno in Lawrenceville

Butternut squash and leek risotto for the main course. Ordered the house salad first and excellent dressing arrived in the cruet.  Delicious and not too crusty bread.  We didn’t have a reservation but you can call Piccolo-Forno . We were lucky we got a table right away. No wait.  It was bustling. Only drawback the surfaces reflect the din so it’s a bit loud.  Food and service very good.  To read a review click here.
