Not Quite Gilligan’s Island and The Ruins of Something Along Route 28

It was late when I left for home cause I went to photograph the girl’s softball game and

because the Bigelow Blvd. ramp was closed, I had to follow a lengthy detour.

I found myself in bumper to bumper traffic at a standstill on one of the most awful roads- Route 28.         It is ALWAYS under construction.

And there I saw this abandoned boat along the  busy highway.

It took  my mind of my impatience at not being home yet, having to wait.

I wondered how it got there.  To whom did it belong?

It’s like being in a coffee shop and suddenly understanding why someone writing a screenplay is sitting there, working.  A snippet of conversation overheard. You write a script.  You get ideas.

I heard the guy say to the woman at the next table, “You have a certain lyrical unexpectedness.”  (inaudible response from her) Him again, ” I played in a bar last night.”

So what’s the story of the boat?  And the next scene just a few feet later, a few more car lengths down?

or the next scene when the traffic stopped again.  These scenes  just make you wonder.

Or if I hadn’t been stopped, would I have seen them?

What People Do in Their Car on the Way to Work

I’ve seen women brush on mascara at a red light, adjust the rearview mirror, apply lipstick.

Lots of coffee drinking. Dancing.  Singing.

Cereal eating. Bagel noshing. People talk on the phone.

Guess who found this shot last summer?  That’s right.  On the way to swim practice.

Granddaughter Anna (9). Remember her photograph of the pickup truck full of mannequin legs?

“Look!  That guy’s brushing his teeth!”

(An electric/battery toothbrush!)  You just wonder where he would spit!

I had the camera in my bag and got it out as quick as I could.  My daughter-in-law was driving so that was good.

This is the shot I was able to get as we passed.  He was getting ready to exit.

Fall Colors Along the National Road- Route 40

When  I was a kid we piled in the car in NJ and drove to Illinois every summer.  This is the route we took.

I drove it home to Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago on my way back from Columbus.

Route 40 The National Road.  I pulled over to catch the autumn hues in the background hills along the way.

There were interesting and quirky scenes but this is the one that stayed with me for the time since I drove along this highway instead of the interstate.

Stink Bug at the Gas Station Trying to Hitch a Ride

I was filling up the tank and a stink bug started crawling up the car window.  Caught his climb with the iPhone and the reflection of the parked car and building make for an interesting perspective. At least to me.  He is definitely a bit soft on the focus but I still liked the composition. Plus he looks about the size of the other car! BIG!

Endangered NJ Diner from the Car Window

Last Thursday I was driving back home to Pittsburgh from New York City.  I was looking for coffee and exited from Interstate 78. Drove a few miles and couldn’t find any and ended up turning around on US Route 22.  I looked over my shoulder and saw the early morning sun hitting the shiny diner.  Did a little research and found a listing on a blog all about Endangered Diners in New Jersey.  If you have a dream of saving a diner, this might be the place for you.  Once you cut through the underbrush and greenery you’ll be able to decide.  Seriously, it is sad to see such ruin and decay.   Breakfast in a decent diner is my dream meal.  Well, one of them.  I like all things DINER.  You can see a close-up photo on the link above or here.

What People Do While Driving

The list of activities is long

Eating, talking on the phone, putting on makeup, shaving with an electric razor, texting, singing, listening to music, drinking coffee.  How about this one?

But I have never seen an electric toothbrush at work in this location!

No kidding. And this shot spotted by granddaughter Anna from the back of the van on our way to her Buckeyes swim practice.

Incongruent Architecture Styles and a Skirmish

Incongruent architecture styles side by side. Old schoolhouse or church next to a new double-wide. Old Washington Ohio along Route 70. The Historical Marker at the side of the road said it was the site of a skirmish with General John H Morgan’s Confederate Raiders. How many signs have the word “skirmish” in them? I read there are three confederates buried in the cemetery. Population (last census) of Old Washington 265. Why the fire hydrant right next to the historical marker? Scroll down for second image.
