Doorknob Garden

Laura’s neighbor has planted a few in the rock garden. I’ve got glass doorknobs in my doors at home (built 1900)

Turns out although they been invented in 1826, glass doorknobs became really popular when metal was needed for WWI click to read

Here’s an article to determine just how old your vintage glass doorknob is….

And is it doorknob or door knob? here’s what grammarly says

Is door knob a compound word?

Compound words can be written in three ways: as open compounds (spelled as two words, e.g., ice cream), closed compounds (joined to form a single word, e.g., doorknob), or hyphenated compounds (two words joined by a hyphen, e.g., long-term).”

From my Grandmother’s Album

Says Sweet 16 in the Year 1917

From my Grandmother’s Album.

Not sure about the significance of this photo. No recognizable relatives. Location is Durand , Illinois. At least this one is dated. My mother would have been five years old that year.

Any ideas on the occasion?

Uncle Harold Milks a Cow c.1936

My father’s brother Harold Paul Hendricks was called “Butch” Born in 1928 .
I estimate he is about 8 or 9 years old
In a different part of the old sticky album.
No chance to see if there’s any writing on the back.

Decorative Doorstoppers

Do you have one in your home? Do you have a door that will swing shut if it isn’t held open with a doorstopper? We used to have a cast iron iron.

I saw a window full of vintage door stoppers, mostly painted cast iron. There are animals, people, flowers. Gnomes. Right now I use a concrete (or is it cement?) owl. I bought the owl in a gallery in Mansfield Ohio.

People collect them. Vintage and Antique Doorstoppers or door porters as they are called are written up in Collectors weekly

Throwback to 1927 Boy Scout Camp

My mother Marian standing on wall on the the left and her brother Robert seated below her. Not sure who the other women are.

I tried to see if one was their mother, my grandmother. They must have taken their brother John to Boy Scout Camp.

I might discover I’ve posted this pic previously.

My Uncle John

My Mother and Her Family c.1926

She’s on the left in her ruffled dress, her brother Robert next to her, then their mother Charlotte in the cloche hat, her brother John and their father Judd. I’m guessing on the date .

A Book for Throwback Thursday

I found this little book on my shelf.

Inside is the name of a dear family friend and the year is 1936.the place name inscribed is Inveraray, which is home to the Duke of Argyll

Here’s the little book I found on my shelf

I look up a couple of surnames. My great grandmother on my paternal side was Rosa Kerr.

So what to do with this little book?

I put it back on the shelf.
