Dorothy H. Holley – Poet, Friend
A slideshow, remembering Dorothy. Blackberries on Greek yogurt. Roses, iris and tulips from her garden. The back porch where we’d sit, have tea, watch birds feed and bathe. She wrote poems after viewing the photos of the Mill at Night and The Cider Press. She baked fresh bread and gave me some to take home for Steve. She’d slice tomatoes and make summer sandwiches to share. She contributed many comments on the blog. She showed us how to live life with courage, grace and love. for Pittsburgh Post Gazette obituary click here

Roberto Clemente/Sixth Street Bridge Sunday Night
A dry ride home despite reports of severe thunderstorms. It was blue sky and white fluffy clouds, sun, intense green from the rain. When I got back to the city it had gotten dark. I pulled over by the Renaissance Hotel on Duquesne Blvd and caught the bridge.(Click to learn more about “self-anchored suspension”)
It was okay but I drove around the block for both arches, shooting through the windshield while sitting at the red light.

Night Game
Baseball game, almost summer. Lights in the city at night offer invitation.

Looking for Signs
A few years ago I wrote a poem with this title. And after the rainstorm I was stopped on Carson Street, traveling west. Before Station Square. The intersection under the trains. Looked up and saw this unusual sign. Seemed different from regular graffiti. Wondered about the person who got up there and wrote it and for whom did they write this short message? It’s how I feel sometimes, driving around. Trying to remember everything I am supposed to do. Feeling distracted. The retaining wall is dark with rainwater.

Hard Rain Falling
A rain so hard I had to pull over on 18th Street hill, watch the water flow down and hit the backs of parked car tires. Splash up. As I sat there, I noticed the downspout or gutter spewing water like a firehose. Shoot just as the wiper goes by to the right. June afternoon thunderstorm.

Grilled Artichokes on Olive Motif Glass Platter
Grilled Artichokes at Brunch on Sunday. Delicious. I was a fortunate guest. Here is one recipe. I love the pattern of the leaves. My mother never prepared an artichoke in her kitchen. When I was a young wife, everyone made hot artichoke dip, using artichoke hearts, drained from a can or a jar and adding a ton of mayo and parmesan cheese, probably from the green can. Spread on a cracker. I liked it at the time. Erika’s Aunt Georgann makes them a tasty rich way with stuffing at Christmas. Artichokes are part of the thistle family and some varieties have thorns. Sunlight on Sunflowers
From outside on the patio I saw the setting sun hit the sunflowers’ petals. I asked the hostess if she minded my photographing her bouquet. It was a few golden moments of sunlight on the sunflowers. To see Van Gogh’s Sunflower Series Paintings click here.
