Melted Blinds and Retro Signage on High Street

James, my SIL2B, spotted the melted blinds as I was shooting the signage.

DAIRY Lit on One Side- QUEEN Lit on the Other

And on the other side…….

Why do you think one word is lit up on each side?

Technology in the Early Morning- Old School in the Afternoon

It’s fun to be a houseguest where you are one of the family and people don’t notice you and your camera. (Actually taken with my phone)

On Saturday in the  early morning I was sitting in the rocking chair and saw James reading the news on his tablet instead of the newspaper that had been delivered and Aunt Mary checking her email.

I was still in my nightgown and sipping coffee.  The scene just struck me.    Later in the day Mary told me that James had gotten the new push mower out of the shed and was going to be mowing the front lawn.  I ran and got my camera and documented the “old school” lawn mowing method preferred by my son-in-law to be.  It was his idea to use both photos to compare and contrast the new technology and the old fashioned lawnmower all in the same day!

Joyland Tavern and the Ladies’ Entrance-Signage on the Road to Johnstown

Tha Ladies Entrance

My friend M and I were driving to that Tulip Festival to see the artwork.  We saw this sign along the way.  Photographed it on the way back.  I found another post of JOYLAND from someone else on the route to Johnstown.  Lots of passersby must photograph this signage.

Three miles to Seward PA the sign says along the highway.

Ohio River Barges in the Rain

Someone asked me a couple of weeks ago if I could photograph and barge and a tug.  And I’ve been trying.  When I can….Problem is, that the times I have captured it, the light is wrong, it’s raining, I couldn’t get access to the riverfront.  Today I was at a friend’s house on Neville Island and I’d asked her about the tugs and barges going by her house.  ALL THE TIME she said.  And they did go by, Empty, filled, just a tugboat not pulling or pushing any barges.  Problem is it started to rain. And it would not stop.  Trying to capture a specific scene has taught me a lot about how I photograph things.

Most of the time I see something and just photograph it.  Or I think about something, have an idea and go and find it.   The light might be great, the garbage has a treasure in it, the kids are ignoring me, I drive by something I just can’t believe it is right there in front of me.  Now- try to capture something specific.  I am not as good at that assignment I’ve just learned.  It would be as a true assignment like a National Geographic photographer.  Stake it out. Camp out.  Know the ins and outs. Shoot thousands of frames.  Monkey around with your results.  Do it again.  Different time of day.  Return to the scene. Try a different angle, different lens and or camera. Shoot. Shoot some more.

It isn’t that I am not that serious about shooting a specific photograph, I just couldn’t  make it come together for this one.  Exasperating and frustrating.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Broken

Broken Haviland China PlateI’d been counting china plates in the dining room, stacked them neatly and proceeded to drop a pillar candle on top of the stack, breaking the first plate.  Haviland.  TheRealSharon’s blogpost today reminded me of the Weekly Photo Challenge:Broken.

I pulled the broken plate out of the box I’d put it in, and set it on the table on the porch.  Added the silver and glass and napkin to complete the photo.

Just to give you an idea of the varied responses from fellow bloggers………. click on the blue link to see photos

-Several bloggers thought Washington D.C. when they thought of broken.

-A Père La Chaise Cemetery ruin photograph  by Isabelle

-An excellent post by Theresa at Thirdhandart is a photo of the broken levees along the Missouri River.

This is only the second time I have responded to the weekly photo challenge but it’s a challenge and I like that!
