Throwback Thursday Shirley Temple Doll from the Fifties

The 1937 movie Heidi starring Shirley Temple inspired this doll. My friend has a vintage doll collection. I photographed her dolls in 2015 and had a jigsaw puzzle created from one of the photos.

Dolls prompt mixed responses.

They creep some people out.

Others collect and display them.

Did you have a special doll?

Dress is pink shiny stripes with a black velvet ribbon
Newark New Jersey with sister Mary and Brother David says April 1960 on the edge but the date taken is April 1959 I’m on the left with the beret

Might not be Easter as there’s no hat

My Sister’s Magical Trick

This photo was taken in NYC 2011 but in the mid fifties this teeny elephant assisted my sister in making me stop crying. She’d be in charge (babysitting) and I’d be sad my parents went out. She would make this elephant appear and then she’d make it fly away and disappear. I’m not sure how many times she repeated this act but I remember believing it was magic.

Don’t know who crocheted this little elephant

The Smithsonian Has One

What is it?

“Dial as you would your telephone?”

It’s a Ken+ Add machine, that’s what. From the 1950’s. Manufactured in Duluth Minnesota  You can see it’s definitely handheld.

Ozzie and Harriet Show playing on a TV in the Lustron Home.

I can only imagine how heavy this television would be should one try to lift it.

Note the date on the calendar 1953!

Emmett Kelly/ “Weary Willie” Clown

My sister thinks we got this hand puppet at the circus. It was before I was 5. Some people have a fear of clowns(coulrophobia)

There is an Emmett Kelly Museum in Sedan, Kansas -born there in 1898.  You don’t hear the word “hobo” anymore.

Another find while cleaning out.
How do you feel about clowns?
