Kite Boarding in Alaska*

or should I say- *Photographing Kite Boarding (or Kite Surfing) in Alaska.

Sure looks exciting.

I learned the difference between a WET suit and a DRY suit.

Kite boarders were in both types, the dry suit worn over clothes and keeping you warm and dry.

The beach is in Homer, Alaska on the Spit. (A geographical landform)

Photographing these adventurous sports was enough for me. I was in a sweatshirt jacket and hat and did not get wet.  The wind was strong that day as you can see by the waves. I knew I should have lugged my 7-200 lens on vacation.  These are taken with a 24-70mm.

Burning Basket – Homer, Alaska

Artist Mavis Muller Art Click for link to artist’s website ( see excerpt below )

Our friends drove us down to the beach on the Spit.

No ones spirit was dampened by the rain.

Earlier people had clipped notes and intentions to the woven basket. There were some fireworks that illuminated the sky, sh0t out from the basket.

“2004 Mavis began the Burning Basket Project as an experience of interactive, impermanent art. Gathered from her background in creating baskets and woven with the desire to engage the public in a unique, living art form, Mavis has facilitated burning baskets in many communities. The large, intricate basket is given as a gft to the people, infused with decoration and spirit by willing participants, and finally burned, dramatically and upwardly releasing positive messages and heartfelt sentiments.”- From the artist’s website

Two different short videos (with the same name) A jumpy little phone video I shot during the Burning Basket ceremony and after the basket their were individuals who lit hula hoops and twirled fire around

He Spotted a Fox on North Carolina Beach

My good friend and blog follower Bill is on the beat.  Again. This time in OIB NC.  (That’s Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina.)

This morning he sent me a photo. (He won the caption contest at the local paper recently- got in the newspaper Without dying or getting arrested post.

Since I was on jury duty today all day,  it felt good to know I had a guest blogpost at the ready! Thanks Bill.  See his photograph below.

And the coincidence is I’d just watched the new version of The Little Prince and was reminded of my favorite quotation.

“Goodbye,” said the fox. “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” “What is essential is invisible to the eye,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

The weekly photo challenge is Early Bird  The golden hour BEFORE sunrise.  This is just at the moment of sunrise on St. George Island State Park, Florida where I was visiting dear friends last summer.  The last morning we were there we drove and then walked to the end of the Island.  It was a beautiful sunrise.

Another early bird- in  a tidal pool, not at the State Park but by the house where we were staying.
