“’Walking to the Sky’ is a portrait of all of humanity rising upwards from the earth to the heavens above — striving into the future with strength and determination.” Says the CMU (a’64) alumnus and artist. I drive by the Carnegie Mellon campus and think about trying to find a place to park to photograph this public art from a closer angle.

“Walking to the Sky” by Carnegie Mellon University alumnus Jonathan Borofsky
The sculpture was inspired by stories his father used to tell him about a friendly giant who lived in the sky. A father and son in each story would ascend into the sky to talk to the giant. In this sculpture a father and son along with another onlooker can be seen observing a number of people walking up the 100’ tall pole to the sky.
Borofsky describes this work as “. . . a portrait of all of humanity rising upward from the earth to the heavens above – striving into the future with strength and determination. Ultimately, this sculpture is a symbol for our collective search for wisdom and awakened consciousness.”
Definitely worth seeing.

Unexpected bagpipe music emanating from Penn Avenue near the Car Park, on our way to the Fireworks Night at PNC Park-
Steve pulled over to the curb. I got out of the car. Placed a bill in her case on the walk and asked if it would be all right to take a photo. She nodded.
A student at Carnegie Mellon University, piping for the Tartans, practicing, playing cool music for downtown Pittsburgh
AND imprinted on her card-
Bagpiping for Western Pennsylvania, (and doing a great job of it, too)
and at the bottom- Weddings, Funerals, Military Functions, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Social Events, Group and Individual Instruction. Solo and Band Prizes -US Canada and Scotland I believe it!
….. Her name is Liz Cherry and she is skilled in the way of the pipes!
I crossed Penn Avenue and took this view, to capture the surroundings.

For years the Gulf Tower Building ( built in 1930) had a beacon that displayed the weather- red lights for fair or blue lights for precipitation
Now The Gulf Tower has a fancy installation of programmed LED lights that change with the holidays, sporting events and special occasions but still tell the weather at five minutes before the hour. The combination of lights can produce any color.
Designed by Cindy Limauro, professor of lighting design at Carnegie Mellon University and husband, Christopher Popowich, partners in C&C Lighting LLC.
This photo was taken from my car window while waiting or my sister to buy her train ticket back to NYC at the AMTRAK station downtown.
Weighs 7 tons! Press release says it’s controversial. It is almost four years to the day the release was issued. Stopped at the red light on Forbes, the corner of Morewood. Saw the tapes around a figure looking up and realized it was part of the sculpture. Jonathan Borofsky graduated from CMU in ’64. Looking at it cheers me. Not everyone feels that way. Or at least they didn’t when it was first installed. And thinking about it and other art installations that stir controversy, I went to look it up.
