A very special Pi Day.  Once in a century.  Tomorrow, 3.14.15 is it.    Get ready!

Celebrated at school today, 3-13-15._ Spearheaded by Mrs. Mihalic.  Creating some spirit!

There were numbers posted all around the hallways on the 800 level to who-knows-what place…..some cool art which I didn’t get to photograph yet.

And my neighbor across the hall…. I went in this morning and said “Hey, where’s your Pi shirt?” and then she turned around and showed me!

In the cafeteria there was a game where students could win a slice of pie. (Similar to a Cake Walk)pies

Posting this one so you can see how you had to land on a certain number when the music stopped to win a slice of pie.

Early Morning Striped Light, Then and Now

I’m sleeping in Maura’s bed this week, while I’m in Ohio, but she came in to dress for school this morning.

As she stood in front of the mirror, the early morning light came in through the blinds.

I remembered.

Somewhere on the blog,a few years ago, I’d captured a shot of Maura with the same striped light on her hair. At least I thought it was the same light.

Her bedroom has eastern exposure.

So I went and searched and found it. September 2013 see the second photo.

The stripes are thin white light in 2013.

The blinds must have been almost closed completely.

Annie in Ohio

Grandson Michael plays Man #3 is his schools musical production. Annie. Laura and I got to see him on stage Friday night. We had a great time. For $1 you could get a flower and write a congratulatory gram attached with a ribbon.

The vase holding the flowers was a wedding gift from my friend Vincie, Erika reminded me.

I’ve got mail

I’ve got mail.

The mail carrier brought it today.

Not just catalogs, flyers with pizza coupons and bulk rate circulars. Real mail, not just junk, addressed to me.

What a happy surprise.

Charlie (3) and his mom mailed his preschool photo AND the self-portrait he drew inside the card. ❤️ Thanks Charlie. (and Laura)

The Man Behind Me Laughed as I Photographed This

Last Friday I was invited to Grandparents’ Day at Michael’s school. I had such a wonderful time seeing his classrooms and meeting his teachers- but before that –

Coffee and doughnuts were served.

I had to look twice at the bottom left doughnut and yes, I pulled out my phone to document what I saw. The man behind me was laughing. I said, “I’m a blogger. I’ve never seen one before.”

Yes, it’s a Bacon Maple Doughnut! I didn’t sample it, just photographed it.

Sunset Captured in the School Windows

Sunset captured in the school windows.  A six word Saturday today. From the archives.

One of the nights when you stay late for the band concert, you’re in the parking lot and you see the sunset, captured in the school windows.

THANK A TEACHER

On this  night before a new school year is about to start and the summer vacation and family visits are memories,  I was thinking about why I wanted to be a teacher in the first place.

I’m writing and posting these photos to pay tribute to wonderful teachers in my life.

In the 3rd grade I had an excellent teacher Grace Wagner from Dravosburg PA  who taught at Winchester- Thurston.   I found an alumni listing online Indiana PA Teachers College class of 1920.  Unfortunately I  can’t find the photo I have of her but plan to unearth it and post someday soon.  Who wouldn’t love a teacher who wrote this about their student.  I found it tonight in an envelope addressed to my parents, inside a deteriorating leather scrapbook.  Isn’t her handwriting beautiful? I am so grateful I discovered this report tonight before  school starts.  “she is able to put her gifts to good use” she wrote.  I feel encouraged once again as I hear her voice as I read the words she wrote in 1960-1961

Miss Wagner marked a 1 ( outstanding) for Play Spirit on the report card.   They don’t have that category on report cards anymore.

And here is Winona Stewart from Morris Plains Borough School in New Jersey.

Winona Stewart

In the sixth grade and also in the 7th and 8th grade I had a most wonderful teacher- Winona Stewart.  We had a Roman Banquet and she read The Human Comedy by William Saroyan aloud after lunch, and also The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford.  Every week we memorized a poem and recited it- The Solitary Reaper by William Wordsworth is one I remember well.   I took this photo of Mrs. Steward in 1966, the year I graduated from 8th grade.  When I lived in Germany and my own kids were young in the early 80’s, I found an address and wrote her a thank you note and told her how I remembered her reading aloud to our class and how she influenced my choice to get a Masters in Reading.  She wrote a beautiful note back to me and one of these days I bet I unearth it, too.  She collaborated with the next teacher I am going to mention.  We did a show called The Curse of Ra  as we learned about Egypt making a gold sarcophagus of papier mache and I was a dancing girl.  It all seemed so exciting and wonderful and fun!

Mr G.  is why I wanted to be an art teacher.  I had him in grade school AND High School.  I didn’t try to contact him soon enough as he was deceased when I though of it.

Arthur W Guenther.  He produced a movie with our 4th grade class called Around the World in 90 Minutes. I was from the Netherlands and we used real wooden shoes in the tulips.   I got a bit part in the French segment too, standing by a Kiosk, chatting away.  I remember Starr Kenyon went down the slide as if skiing.  Titi Moglia wore a kimono and had a fan and there were pink tissue paper cherry blossoms.  I wish I could see the movie again.

When I think of all his creativity,  I am in awe.

Mr. Guenther danced on Broadway in the show South Pacific with Mary Martin and showed us his scrapbook,

Mr. Guenther helped finish the monochrome portrait of me in 4th period oil painting class.  It hangs in my bathroom.

My granddaughter Anna asked this past week, “Why are you all green?:  and I started thinking about Mr Guenther and how he inspired me.

And here I am tonight, wondering if I can inspire someone as I start my new classes.

What teacher inspired you?

What wonderful teachers did you have when you were growing up?

Hopscotch

Hopscotch. Laura bought sidewalk chalk and I tried to remember how to draw out the squares. Hopping on one foot was tricky for Charlie. The rock Maura chose to throw into a square rarely stayed in the box on one turn, rolling out into unmarked territory. I remember some hopscotch boards painted on asphalt in elementary school but can’t remember seeing kids using them when I had lunch duty years ago. Four square, yes. Hopscotch , no. Do kids play Hopscotch in 2018?

Larimer School Revisted

Didn’t someone just post about beauty in decay?

I know photographers who go into abandoned buildings and take some striking images. Usually with a friend to spot.

Me? I took these from my car window.

Haunting views of Mayview Mental Hospital come to mind, a documentary video created by a wonderful teacher I had at Manchester Craftsmen’s GuildJill Wiggins.

I returned to Larimer school where my friend Joan used to teach. You might remember the initial post.

Here is what I saw this time.   Clearly there is something happening on site.  Just now sure what.

School’s out for the Summer and for me? for always! That’s it! Retired!

Thanks Susan for helping me get the job at Carrick and for sending me off at the finish.   You and Ava were a big help to me, made it a nice ending with Origami  paper flying around the parking lot, your catching it.

Thanks for taking my picture in the parking lot, all packed up and ready to pull out.  Hooray.  I couldn’t have done it without you.
