My grandparents Kay and Matt Walsh were married on Valentine’s Day in 1942 and this cute couple adorned their cake. Within a few months my grandfather, who owned Jimmy Ryan’s Dixieland Jazz Club on West 54th Street, was in uniform and heading overseas. These little bisque lovebirds made an appearance at each of their four daughters’ weddings and the third generation of granddaughters continued the tradition. I’ve always thought the groom looked like a dapper New Yorker, like my grandfather. My husband, Joel, and I were delighted that it was present at our own Valentine’s Day wedding in 2010.

Matthew and Melissa Wed at Mansions on Fifth
Months of planning. Details and lists. Flowers, cake, music, officiant, cookies baked for the cookie table. A lot of work. A lot of love.
Friends and family offering support and cheering the couple on to a happy life together. Relatives travelled from California,Florida, Jersey & North Carolina, Ohio to witness the marriage.
My DIL’s first cousin Matthew married Melissa this evening and I had the honor of being the photographer. Mansions of Fifth was an elegant venue.
Uncle Frank, Aunt Linda and Uncle Donald were the drivers of Uncle Frank’s vintage cars which added a lot to the ambience of the occasion.
A lovely wedding. The rain held off- I had a big golf umbrella with me-
though the clouds looked threatening.
Chas, the shirt PITT shirt vendor, on the corner of Forbes and Bigelow Blvd came to the car window to offer congratulations AND two free PITT T-shirts. And the bride is an alum! Thanks Chas.

There was a call to submit an unusual cake or cake-topper so I submitted one via Instagram from a wedding where I was a guest on Valentine’s Day 2010. It was exciting that it got chosen from the entries.
The Times called the bride, whose cake it was on, to get her permission to use it and hear the story of the cake topper.
It’s the second photo of the slide show with the story in the caption below but just in case…………..
The special story was told by Charlotte Rowell Sellier, granddaughter of Matthew and Catharine Walsh.
It was on top of her grandparents wedding cake on Valentine’s Day 1942
and then on Charlottes and Joel’s Valentine’s Day wedding cake in 2010.
You can read how the cake topper was used by the Walsh’s four daughters and then by all their granddaughters. A wonderful heirloom and family tradition. Lots of LOVE!
Charlotte’s Grandfather, Matthew Walsh, owned Jimmy Ryan’s Jazz Club in New York City.
This photo is a bit different from the one posted in the Times.
Here you can see the entire cake but the topper is hidden behind the hearts.

Jessica and Matthew Got Married at The National Aviary in Pittsburgh
Saturday July 19, 2014
The whole day was filled with love, love, love. There was mist, then drizzle, but no downpour. A little thunder and at the end of the evening we heard the Pittsburgh Pirates fireworks, boom boom boom.
Jessica and Matthew worked hard on every detail but the weather was out of their control.
Everyone was a good sport and carried umbrellas, one maid of honor wore her boots! I covered the camera with plastic grocery bags. And then it stopped.
It was long awaited for and very happy day.
You can see the mutual admiration, love and affection for one another in these photographs. The wedding and reception were held at The National Aviary on the North Side of Pittsburgh
Congratulations and all the best to Jessica and Matthew. It was a lovely wedding to capture.
Enjoy your European honeymoon adventure.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Layers
Layers. Layers of cake. Seemed an easy theme to respond to – and I’m sure the layers of cake will be posted by many other bloggers.
The only problem with this week’s challenge is knowing when to stop adding photos of layers.
And then there’s the question of whether or not to have the photos “peopled” or “unpeopled”.
This took FIVE hours to make. Seriously. It has lived in my freezer for a time. Not a cake but created in a bundt pan with many layers of jello, some layers mixed with yogurt to get the different tint. When I taught visual arts I always had to remind the students the how to make a tint by adding white. No worries, this item it was not ingested.
