Purple Things July 2012

Rainbow Jello made in layers in a Bundt pan.

Reblogged from July 2012 there used to be weekly word challenges. If you’ve followed me for a time you may remember these images.

I enjoyed participating, coming up with photos to match the word of the week.

July 2012-

What I discovered is I shoot a lot of red.

I blurred my eyes to spot purple in the archives.

Yes, I  made the rainbow jello to photograph.  It took 5 hours. I got the recipe from my daughter Laura who found it on the web here

The one pictured is not spiked and no one ate it either.  It is still in my freezer to slice and photograph with light coming through the jello like stained glass.

Purple views, white balance setting askew but it works for the challenge.

A compendium of purple.

Jet Trails and Kite Tails, Gallery of Lines

LINES. Cheri Lucas Rowlands challenged WordPress bloggers to find lines through their lens. Here is my gallery of lines. Jet trails and kite tails.  Sculpture, railroad tracks, smokestacks and jello layers.

Zero Nutritional Value

It might even be in the negative column for nutrition. Those maraschino cherries alone, with the preservatives and dye, could do you in but I remember this colorful combination from childhood. Bright green lime, white pears, red cherries. Squeeze the juice of half a lemon to cut the intense sweetness!

My mother always made this Christmas Jello. She’d buy a large green labeled can of Bartlett pear halves. She’d put a cherry in each indentation and hope they didn’t float away.

I don’t even know anyone who makes Jello anymore. Well, maybe a strawberry pretzel salad at a shower or potluck or picnic buffet?

For Easter she’d put together the yellow lemon Jello with grated carrots and a can of crushed pineapple to which she added a pinch of salt.

Because the green, white and red one reminded me of my growing up, I had my granddaughter Anna help put it together and it graced our Christmas dinner table at my son and daughter-in-law’s home.

Layered Rainbow Jello and Cake

Rainbow Jello Interior

When I saw this week’ photo challenge LAYERED by Ben Huberman at WordPress, I thought of these photos immediately. The layered rainbow jello took five hours to make,- a plain layer had to set and them jello with some greek yogurt in the next layer to make the jello opaque.  The creation was to photograph, not eat.  I kept in the freezer for such a long time I won’t even say.

Steve took that colorful layered rainbow cake into work and everyone in the office liked it.  I couldn’t eat any cause I knew how much food color was in the batter.

Green Things

Green things.

It’s been a fun week of colorful collages.

Once I got started it was hard to stop.

A lot of response was generated by the different colors and it’s made me see the trend in my photography, color wise, what I’m drawn to….besides the human element.  The clothes we choose, our dishes, the bed linens and artwork which surround us in our lives. Many have commented on which color is their favorite.

Right now everywhere I look it is green green green   We’ve had a lot of rain.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Layers

Layers.  Layers of cake.  Seemed an easy theme to respond to – and I’m sure the layers of cake will be posted by many other bloggers.

The only problem with this week’s challenge is knowing when to stop adding photos of layers.

And then there’s the question of whether or not to have the photos “peopled” or “unpeopled”.

jello

This took FIVE hours to make.  Seriously.   It has lived in my freezer for a time.  Not a cake but created in a bundt pan with many layers of jello, some layers mixed with yogurt to get the different tint.  When I taught visual arts I always had to remind the students the  how to make a tint by adding white.           No worries, this item it was not ingested.
