But What’s a Hoogie?

Submarine sandwiches are called lots of things – depending on where you live.

A grinder, a hoagie, a sub, a hero, a blimpie- to name a few.

Last Sunday afternoon,  I filled up the tank in Clintonville, Ohio  before heading to Pittsburgh and saw this sign.

A new name or a typo? Well,no typewriter was involved but a misspelling? or intentional naming of a new type of sandwich.

My DIL said, why didn’t you go in and ask them. Never occurred to me.

Windows With Signage and/or Things in Them – Gallery 5

They said it was a Weekly Photo Challenge so I turned it into a Week-long Photo Challenge

Today I’m posting Windows with signage or things in them.

When I went to the external hard drives looking for the Infant of Prague in a window (thanks Jack) I saw quite a few windows photos  that could fit in several categories.  Categories with windows pictures reminded me of that old 25,000 Pyramid Game show hosted by Dick Clark.

Men on Ladders Spotted by Maura

Reminded me of the toothpaste billboard in Croatia.  You might remember it, the supposed workers hanging on the side of the building in Zagreb.

Today at the Easton Mall, Maura (5) asked me what the men  on the ladders were doing?   Huh?

I looked up, then pulled out the phone. Thanks Maura.

Good eyes.  I might have missed them.  They are 3D in person.   Here they look flat.

Follow Me to Forbes Field Vintage Sign

Saw this sign on the back wall behind the Cobra Kings band at Excuses on the South Side Friday night. The kitchen door is on the right, the spice rack a blur.

Some of you may know how Baseball in October is a big thrill in the city of Pittsburgh right now, after twenty one years without a winning season we have one now…. and then some!

Another game against the St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow afternoon. On our home field of PNC Park. Everyone is hoisting the Jolly Roger flags and cheering them on.

Forbes Field Forever is a website which maintains the memories although the actual field is no longer there, but the brick wall with the painted distance numerals is still in Oakland, covered with some ivy. Home plate in a U of Pitt building floor, covered with plexiglass for all to see. GO BUCS!

Do Not Rock Cars!

Atop the Ferris Wheel.  The sign said Do Not  Rock  Cars.  

No kidding,  but Jack (6) my grandson would have loved to rock the car when we were stopped at the top!

Mr. George Washington Gale Ferris although born in Illinois  founded a company to test metals for railroads and bridges- G.W. G. Ferris in  Pittsburgh PA.  Mr Ferris lived on the North Side and died in Mercy Hospital Pittsburgh of typhoid fever.

It’s a Blimp!

Three of the kids were playing in the sandbox and backyard tent when we saw and heard this blimp.  They were really excited.  It was going back and forth and all around. I had seen it earlier on Polaris Parkway but thought it was a tethered balloon for a used car place or something like that.

I shot the first with the phone and the second with the Canon 5D.  I think the phone pic looks pretty good. But the larger file could withstand a crop to read the blimp’s lettering which we could not with our eye.

So it’s beer, day two!

Studio 35- Oldest Independent Cinema & Drafthouse, Hosts Free Oscars Event in Clintonville

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On my way to Laura and James’ house, I saw this cool theatre, Studio 35,  and read the marquee.  Pulled over to the curb and got out the camera.  Thought it sounded like a fun evening.  Took the shot from the car and the day was a gray one.

This theatre looks l like the ones I knew growing up.  No theatre in Pittsburgh serves beer as far as I know.

My DIL was teasing about my getting home to watch the Oscars Sunday night, live stream on a computer as I have no TV that gets any channels. It is always fun to see the best and worst dressed though.  A lot of hype in the media.  But this image evokes nostalgia for me.  One of these visits to Columbus I am going to have to go watch a movie here.
