Light Up Night 2011 Pittsburgh PA

On the way home from school I wound around and up Sycamore Street to Mount Washington.  Parked and pulled out the sweater and blazer in the back of the car and layered as best I could.  No tripod, no cable remote.  Took this with the Self-Timer and propped the camera on an iron fence on the Duquesne Incline platform.  Watched the sky grow dark.  Met people from Dallas, Las Vegas,  a couple of Pitt students  and New York City and photographed them with the light up night behind them. An Art Institute Special Effects major was shooting a time lapse exposure and we chatted.  Did I mention it was in the low thirties?  With a wind chill factor that made it seem really chilly.

A week ago we were in the Columbus Athletic Club bowling and preparing for the wedding celebration.  Didn’t feel like driving right home after school and had stayed late to get ready for next week.  An art room always needs attention.

My blog header is Light Up Night 2010 shot from the Monongahela Incline.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Fall

Tenth Street Bridge in Fall light on Monday morning on the way to school. You can see the Liberty Bridge behind the Tenth Street Bridge. Bridges and their construction fascinate me. This morning shot from the Birmingham Bridge (I pulled over and stopped with the flashers in the bike lane and there was almost no traffic) But the reflection in the Monongahela River is what made me stop. The river mirror-like this morning, so still. October is my favorite month to shoot and I am going to make a point of leaving for work earlier so I can catch the Autumn Dawn. How great it would have been if the trees had changed colors already but they are just beginning. And V I think I see Prospect Middle School up there on the left top of Mt. Washington (33 years of fortunate students) !!! Oh my.

What I Saw Out the Window at School

The cropped version and the original.   You get a better feel for the place in the second, original, full size.

WILD turkeys but they seem fairly domesticated and brave ( or not too bright?). There are a lot of them in the area (remember my first day of school post with the family of turkeys on the sidewalk.)

Urban turkeys.

Two and a Half Year Old Photography Assistant

This would not be a funny picture if granddaughter Maura had knocked it over. I was shooting her grandfather’s family reunion last Saturday. Caught her with my phone camera.

Working at Jim’s Steaks Philly

From the archives.  People at work series- graciously allowed me to photograph as we ordered drinks to go with our cheesesteaks.

I like the backlight of the glass door fridge, her quizzical expression, patiently waiting for our order. Tourists!

I am sorry I didn’t get her name but perhaps someone will know and comment.

In the city of brotherly love last summer for a wedding and it was late Saturday night, a line around the block to get into Jim’s Steaks.  Steve and I waited.  It was well worth the wait      And just last week, Mark said to me that it’s all in the bread.  Hmmmm. Good thing we live across the state in Pittsburgh!!!

What I Learned in Photoshop Class

After coffee last October 30th in Columbus OH.

Eight weeks goes by fast. Three hours a week. Jill Wiggins was our wonderful and patient teacher at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild on the North Side. She really explains everything. Multiple times!.   The project I presented that I thought came out the best was the greeting card of Laura and James just a few days after their engagement in Columbus OH.  I desaturated the whole picture and then added a mask layer and then used a brush tool to recolor just their faces in the style of the Social Documentary Photographer Phil Borges effect (he is a master).  And when I pulled into the garage I held it up in the ambient light and took a photo of the greeting card I printed from the file.  Jill is a great teacher and creates these handouts with the “recipes” all broken down so you can do them later without missing a step.  I love shooting the photos but don’t enjoy the tedium of computer time and being EXACT. As classmate and fellow photographer Andy says,  “Photoshop is NOT intuitive.” which helped me a lot to understand why it is tricky for me.

Outcome

I liked the photo just fine the way it was.
The autumn trees in the background.
The subjects two of my favorites in the world.
With determination and time I followed the
directions to the letter. Not easy for me.

Super Moon Over Pittsburgh

No Cow Jumping Over

What a moon! Big and bright.
Illuminate limitations of photography.
Capture an enormous sky, city light, moonlight.
Being there and looking at a photo later/
what I experienced earlier are so different.
Just hard to capture huge super moon tonight.
But lots of fun trying.

Steve went with me to Mt. Washington and what a crowd of photographers set up with their fancy equipment and tripods when we arrived. I have a nice camera but I can’t imagine what some of that equipment cost!

I wish I had asked Keith or Andy some tips on how to shoot the city light and super moon light simultaneously and get a good effect.  I thought it was hard.  And that Spring weather was 40ish but felt like a freeze with the wind from the river.  I shot primarily with the 70-200mm lens.  Wished I knew more about how to get the city and moon at the same time but there wasn’t anything you could do about the positioning of the moon in relation to the buildings. Duh.   Oh it was so bright!

Mississippi Spillover and a Rowboat

Still a few views from the Quad Cities weekend.

Bettendorf Iowa
Sunday morning. A perfect fall day. The sun shone right on the red rowboat. No oars in sight.

Full Moon Over Newlyweds at Quicksilver

Midway PA out near Canonsburg. Every wedding has a feeling to it and this one Friday night was relaxed and  sweet.  What a nice couple.  We went out onto the golf course and checked the time, it was 10:10. Moonlight, the light from the clubhouse and indirect flash.  Megan and Gregg, the happy newlyweds. *Blogged with permission from a gracious bride!)  [24-70 L series Canon lens, 1″ at 2.8 aperture. Canon 5D]

It was a happy wedding. Thought we'd try to capture the full moon.
