Goodbye to the O – Original Hot Dog Shop- Oakland Pittsburgh

My friend Roberta sent me a Post-Gazette article this evening, An elegy to the ‘O’: A beloved hot dog shop closes after 60 years written by Mick Stinelli and Dan Gigler. It told about the sad and sudden closing of The Original Hot Dog Shop. A long time late night favorite in the heart of Oakland adjacent to University of Pittsburgh. Upon closing they donated “7 tons of potatoes to charity”. (They were famous for their fries)

We’d get a couple of hot dogs and share the huge order of fries, sometimes before a Poetry Reading at Hemingway’s. Or after. No matter what time you ate there, it was a familiar and reliable taste and experience.

Here’s a photo I took of the landmark from a 2010 blog post.

Berlin Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church built in 1895.

Peek at the results of war- WW2 bombing raid.

“The Gedächtniskirche or Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is the symbolic centre of West Berlin, an anti-war memorial to peace and reconciliation.“

And note the rapid weather change from the front of the church- sun and blue sky to  sudden gray, rainy sky as we walked around to the back.

700th Post

Spring 2008 this photograph VILLAGE CIGARS, sold at the PERSAD  Celebrate Life, Celebrate Art auction held at the Carnegie Museum of Art.   The first to be auctioned, the bid was fairly low but it still felt good to donate it and the winner was really pleased to get it. It felt exciting to be recognized as Best New Artist that year.   You might have seen this image on my website.  It marks the spot where we turn right to get to my sister’s place down the block.  It’s been there forever.  Held together with some duct tape, a little worse for wear,it looks even more ragged these days  but my sister helped me get a good angle for this shot suggesting I go across Seventh Avenue.  Shot with a Canon 20D, before I upgraded!  This is not the original file but a pdf, hence the words at the bottom and the gray frame.  Pulling from the archives but not the external hard drives tonight.  Friday completes the first full week with students.

No More Beer Here!

Lawrenceville’s Historic (1861) Iron City Brewing now closed (click underlined name for links) According to the article the plan is shops, condos, a garage in the former stables. Beer production has moved to Latrobe. Stopped at a red light and a line of cars.  Textures from the cobblestones & metal bridge, black paint peeling. Stone wall and a sign. Framed by the car window.  Traffic  behind me in the mirror. Afternoon light on metal and stone.

Iron City Brewing left the city for Latrobe. They've been closing schools for years but the brewery??
Cobblestone, stone wall, rusting metal trestle-textures everywhere.
