Season of Lights in the Darkness

As the days grow shorter, the colorful lights help relieve the darkness.

Let it Glow at Phipps Conservatory

This evening Steve and  I went to the Holiday Dinner and the lights display Let it Glow at the Phipps Conservatory in Schenley Park. The food was good and there were flickering candles in glass lanterns lighting the curvy paths throughout the Conservatory. The winter lights in the darkness were festive and fun to see.

Throwing Coins in the Wishing Well

We drove from Columbus this afternoon and  pulled into Pittsburgh and went straight to the Phipps Conservatory Botanical Garden to see the train exhibit before they change exhibits after Sunday.

Do you ever throw a coin in a wishing well or a fountain and make a wish?

Here is Michael making his coin splash, thinking about his wish.

IMG_1880He told me to wait to take the picture as he was thinking about his wishes carefully.  I was scrounging around in the bottom of my purse pockets for coins.

Charlie made a splash, too.

I was trying to get the moment of impact on the water.

Here are the trains.

Phipps Conservatory Sports Orange and My Friend Captured It

Another guest post with the orange theme.

My friend and former colleague,Toni, emailed me photos from her Sunday visit to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens,  ORANGE.

Seeing the orange made her think of the theme this week.

I asked if she’d agree to be guest blogger and here are her orange photos.

Thanks Toni.  Your photos are a bright spot.

Scottish Bard’s 256th Birthday Anniversary – Just before sunset in the snow

Steve said it was Robbie Burns birthday today.  Born January 25, 1759.

We missed the fancy fundraiser for the museum last week, the Haggis and men decked out in kilts of their clan.

We missed the “not your grandfather’s ” Robert Burns birthday party in Lawrenceville and the one on the South Side with all kinds of scotch at Piper’s pub.

But we got to pay homage to the Scottish poet, just before dusk.  The end of a January gloomy Sunday.

We headed out to Schenley Park to the Robert Burns statue (by Scottish sculptor J. Massey Rhind)  and it started to snow.

Mrs. Peacock sounds like a game of clue but here is  a snippet of the article in the Mary 3, 1914 Post-Gazette.

An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,
For promis’d joy!

                                                                                          My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;

from Tam o’Shanter

But pleasures are like poppies spread—

You seize the flow’r, its bloom is shed;

Or like the snow falls in the river—

A moment white—then melts forever.

The smiles of love adorn
Man’s inhumanity to man
Makes countless thousands mourn!”

Winter Light Garden and Flower Show at Phipps Conservatory

Sparkling and colorful, glowing and shimmering.  Beautiful display with candlelight throughout the show.

Thanks for the cool suggestion to head to the Phipps Conservatory after dinner, V.  The Winter Lights Garden was magical on this cold and clear winter night, with the moon peeking through.  A great train display too, but not many pics of it.  We had fun.  xxoo
