What’s on Your Wish List?

What’s on your wish list?

Anything hard to find?

Something you’ve had on your list but never received?

My son Mark recently remembered his longed for toy (thirty + years), best gift ever.  You might remember that post of his receiving the Millennium Falcon. It was my top post in 2011,  the most viewed.

Not to confuse Star Wars and Star Trek but how about this Barbie and Ken Star Trek set?  It’s probably gone now but I saw it a couple of weeks ago.

The Art of Gift Wrap

Thursday, I was going to meet a new baby and wanted to take a gift.

Called around and found wooden milestone blocks/cubes and in the colors of the nursery!

A helpful man answered the phone and said there was one set at their store- Contemporary Concepts.

When I got there I took a look around. Found a couple of Christmas gifts to purchase, too. A very eclectic mix of gifts from elegant tableware to crazy socks .

Contemporary Concepts does mail order, too.

The colorfully printed Pittsburgh dish towels caught my eye for those who have moved away.  Lots of interesting toys and potential baby shower gifts, too. They feature cool Pittsburgh neighborhood t-shirts Neighbor Teaze designed by Julia DiNardo- an elementary school classmate of my son Matthew.

(I won’t go into how the store moved 6 months ago to the Trader Joe’s building, pretty close to my house-that’s another story. Of course, I drove to the old location in Squirrel Hill first. The new location has free parking)

But I finally arrived and was thrilled to find  the right present waiting. And in the colors of his nursery, too.  Yes, I said it twice cause it was a Serendipitous find!

“Would you like it gift wrapped? “

Now the thought of complimentary gift wrap evokes nostalgia for customer service of yesteryear- and what a lovely touch.

Meet Abby.  She did the beautiful gift wrapping.

I asked her if she’d mind being included in my People at Work series And she agreed.

Look Who Arrived in the Mail Today

Happy 90th Birthday to the Queen of England today.

My sister sent me a package to cheer me.  The unexpected box was waiting for me on the porch when I got home this afternoon.

My friend V was with me and got to share the experience and fun first hand.  Vincie asked, “Who thinks to make such things?”

Check out Solar Queen 90th Birthday Edition by Kikkerland Design.

I had to video her waving so you could get the full effect. The solar panel is at the top of her handbag. No battteries necessary.

And here is how the real Queen spent her birthday today

Best Groomsmen’s Gifts in the Galaxy- Engraved Light Sabers

Groom-to-be  Shawn (tomorrow August 8th) bestowed these unique gifts upon his groomsmen at the rehearsal dinner tonight.

ENGRAVED.

Jason, Davide and Jason test them out while Shawn looks on in the intersection of the beams of light.

I felt like we needed a swell of Star Wars Music.

Most unusual and creative groomsmen’s gift I’ve seen.

My School Neighbor Gave Me These- Said They Look Like Me

A couple of weeks ago, my next door neighbor at school put out a call for a poster about reading.

There was to be a state inspection and a visual aid encouraging reading was on the checklist. When I saw her in the hall, I offered a collage of photographs of students reading their favorite books.  She was thrilled and one of her students created a large poster with the photos and added some text about the benefits of reading.

It looked good and she told me it was well received by the inspection team.  My colleague was pleased.  And grateful.  I wish I had a photo of the finished poster to include in this post but it is at school.

As a thank you, she brought me this unexpected gift.

She said when she saw them at the store, they reminded her of me.  I looked in the mirror and I see the resemblance!

When I saw the smiling face socks,  I thought of fellow blogger Stef and her Smile, Kiddo blog. Always on the lookout for smiles.

Here’s a link to a cool post titled What I Like About Me.

Right now the high school students are working on creating images for a positive image campaign so it’s a great post for that theme.

p.s. You can see Twilight, Gregory Crewdson’s book of photographs.  If you haven’t seen his movie Brief Encounters about how he makes his photographs, check out the trailer and the film.

Unexpected Gift

The seniors in sixth period finished their Digital Photography exam.   And after homeroom, the seniors were allowed to go home.

One of the young women in the class and my homeroom, handed me this two tone metal dog pin and said, “Here Ms. Hendricks.  This is for you.”

I was so surprised. She’d made it in Jewelry Class.

I took the highly polished pin and pinned it on my shirt collar, fastening the safety clasp, thanked her and told her how lovely it was….  but then as I thought about it, I asked her if maybe she should give it to someone in her family, it was so beautiful.

She said, “No, I want you to have it.”

My first year teaching high school is coming to a close.  I’m touched when asked to sign a yearbook. They want me to bring my camera to graduation on Saturday.

I’ve learned a lot.

Thank you Jaquea.                                           (p.s.  It is really difficult to photograph highly polished metal)
