On my way back to Pittsburgh from New York after a nice Thanksgiving holiday with the family.
Here’s a shot taken Monday through a train window- #43 The Pennsylvanian – as we crossed over both the river and the Schuylkill Expressway.
My parents lived in Philadelphia 12 years but I lived there for only one of those years. A flood of nostalgia as the train rolled into Philly.
There are interesting place names (how about Wissahickon?) you don’t find anywhere else in the country. The river and expressway name always was hard for me to spell correctly. It’s that extra “L” in there. Turns out it’s a Dutch word meaning “hidden or skulking creek”
Alaska Railroad Conductor
Meet Will H. Our conductor on the train ride from Denali to Anchorage. Army veteran. They even slowed the train so we could photograph Denali and two other mountain ranges which were all completely visible on a beautiful clear day.
Although we are back in NYC and I like to keep the blog in RT, now that computer access/internet is available, I want to post some photos I had in my real camera not iPhone.
Train Ride to Denali
Mary and I got a cab to the Anchorage Railroad Depot, checked in our tagged bags, drank a delicious coffee and waited to board the glass roofed train to Denali.
At the start of the train ride there were just nine of us and then 58 joined us at Talkeetna. It’s now the end of the season that started in May.
We decided to get breakfast after an early start
Mary ordered the reindeer/ egg scrambler skillet.
Chef Malachi cooked our breakfasts to perfection! Delicious.

Our conductor A.J. He has to get off the train to manually switch the tracks so we could wait on the side as another train passed, going south.
Matthew our excellent server on the left and Crystal our knowledgeable tour guide.
Both of them made it a fun and memorable adventure. The train ride is about eight hours. We didn’t knit or nap, didn’t want to miss a single second.

We saw a pair of Trumpeter Swans who mate for life.

After the lunch crowd left the dining car and went back upstairs, I enjoyed a Forest pie with rhubarb, apple, blackberry and strawberries topped with vanilla ice cream. Matt asked if I wanted a lot of whipped cream or a little. 🙂
Everyone was so nice, the scenery so incredible. Andy took a photo of us at the table too, which was great for the memory book, but unfortunately I did not take his pic.
We highly recommend the train tour.

That will be this coming Wednesday.
But when the trains for Boston were announced (as I stood under the departure boards) I thought I might get run over by the rush of humanity.
Getting to their platform, getting to their train home. Rush rush rush.

Train Trestle in Traffic
Driving down the Parkway West as they call it (Route 376) the construction area provided lots of traffic.
Cars with brakes and I was able to photograph a scene I’ve just admired from the driver’s seat.
Train cars on the tracks were the added bonus.

Oh, I’ve seen car and I’ve seen train…….

A sliver of a city scene. A bit of sunlight. Shapes and lines. A car driving down the middle of the road.
I went and looked at all my blog posts tagged transportation and I ‘ve shot a lot of cars, trains, buses, motorcycles, taxis and trucks.
Pick a lane. Is this car over the double line or what? Maybe they are looking at the train and not noticing or they are planning to pass the cars lined up, waiting to get into the garage.
