She Calls Me MIL Sometimes, I’ve Called Her DIL

In Virginia, holding Anna who will be 8 in a week.

Married to my eldest Mark, excellent mother to Anna, Michael, Jack and Maura, taking a break from being a NICU nurse while she drives the kids to swim practice and soccer and preschool and Brownies… (And best giver of treats and hugs to Murphy the Airedale.) Today’s her birthday.  She always calls me and updates me on the family happenings, asks for a recipe I made that she liked, threatens to buy me giant gnomes for my garden and an XXL sweatshirt with a cat AND an American Flag (for my 4th of July bday) combo on the front.  She is patient, loving and generous. Incredibly accepting, too!   She is good at Thank You notes  And just last week she hosted a wonderful shower for her sister-in-law & will be Laura’s Matron-of-Honor next month.  I was going to post a pic of the little ceramic Jack-o-Lantern she made in grade school(I keep it in the china cabinet) She was throwing it out years ago and I salvaged it from the trash heap but a clay pumpkin doesn’t illustrate her goodness and loveliness. Oh yes, I almost forgot. She gets me to stop wearing my shrunken cotton long sleeve tees that seem more like crop tops- Fashion consultant with much love! She’s the one who got me started shooting weddings and is still waiting for her percentage.   HBTY!  love, Ruthie

Garden of Marys

Northern Ohio

I was driving to Columbus OH from Conneaut Lake one August and took some back roads.  I wish I could remember how I came to be on the other side of this outdoor statuary which was for sale.  Perhaps a stop at a gas station.  You might remember the story of how I retrieved a Mary statue standing out on the curb in our neighborhood.  It just didn’t seem right for the trash. Then a nice woman who was doing some gardening for me, took the Mary statue home to her house to paint her since she was so weathered.  The master gardener also a puppeteer had the urge to restore her since she was so beat up looking.  Turns out she was plastic and hard to paint but she is in my side garden now, looking bright and renewed.  I actually hope she weathers a bit.  I did call her Our Lady of the Weeds but my sister is here and made the side garden really lovely so I will have to rename her.  I am intrigued by private grottos and garden statuary.  You may remember Mary in the Springtime or Mary in the Snow. Sometimes the placement of Mary statues in Pittsburgh is a real juxtaposition. Stuck in odd spots.  No matter where I see the Mary statues, they look peaceful to me.

Places to Get Food- #3 in a Series- Gridiron Grill

Heinz Field- Pittsburgh PA.

Photographed at the Kenny Chesney concert a few years ago.  A friend of Mark’s gave us tickets to go and it was really an all day affair.  We took the boat across the Allegheny River to the Stadium.  I will admit at the time I did not even know who Kenny Chesney was or any of the songs he sang.  I know, I know, hard to believe but true.  It was amazing to watch the concert goers stand, sway and sing at the top of their lungs to every song he sang. There were a ton of warm up bands and Kenny arrived when it was getting dark and what an entrance. They knew them all.  Every word!

So all this talk of football season and this photo came to mind and I am starting to wonder if I have posted it already cause I like the patient standing formation of the people waiting to get their hotdogs. And the cowboy hats in our city for the evening!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Up

Thanks for all the nice comments and emails and congrats on the 700th post.

So what to post for seven hundred and one?  WordPress helped me out at the end of the week with releasing the weekly photo challenge today- UP!   Thought of this photo I took in September 2004 in Hardy,Virginia.  Uncle Matty tossing niece Anna up in the air.  Wheeeeeee.   She started second grade on Wednesday.  Matty in in New York City visiting his Aunt Mary (my sister) as they prepare for the arrival of Irene.  He heads back to Zagreb, Croatia, soon. You saw him on the Megabus. One thing leads to another.  And Winston the rescue horse was in Hardy VA next door to Erika’s(guest blogger) parents. Anyway, I have always liked this photo and the feeling I get looking at it.  The trusty Canon EOS Rebel for this shot! Newer readers might want to check out  my 10-10-10 blog post of Anna hula-hooping.  See time fly by.

Working at Jim’s Steaks Philly

From the archives.  People at work series- graciously allowed me to photograph as we ordered drinks to go with our cheesesteaks.

I like the backlight of the glass door fridge, her quizzical expression, patiently waiting for our order. Tourists!

I am sorry I didn’t get her name but perhaps someone will know and comment.

In the city of brotherly love last summer for a wedding and it was late Saturday night, a line around the block to get into Jim’s Steaks.  Steve and I waited.  It was well worth the wait      And just last week, Mark said to me that it’s all in the bread.  Hmmmm. Good thing we live across the state in Pittsburgh!!!

Tastykakes Still Life

From the archives.  Jim’s Steaks in Philly. Tastykakes. Behind glass. Mary wrote about Drake’s, Hostess, and there’s Little Debbie brands from different regions.  Each one has a snack cake specialty – Ring Dings, Ho- Hos or Twinkies or Oatmeal Creme Pies!

There was a commercial, Tastykake Cake and Pies.

What’s Going On Across the River in Millvale, PA?

Didn’t have to dig too deep for this series of shots.
A  town about ten minutes away.
As with collections, decorators say to group
like items together.
Of course, as I look at the finished post I am
thinking of a return trip to capture the dinette store,
the modernize your home sign,
and the storefront  with items for pet birds.

Seven images of Millvale, PA from the files.  Millvale is happening! I love the Beatles painted on the mural by Attic Records and the laundromat.

Millvale,PA home to my wonderful framer Mark Panza at Panza Gallery and the delicious French bakery of Jean-Marc Chatellier.  The beautiful St. Nicholas Croatian Church with the Maxo Vanko Murals and Holy Spirit Parish up on a high hill where Marlene’s Aunt Kitty and Uncle Shrimp married years ago.(J & J more recently, too)

Steve and I go to Grant Bar  on Grant Avenue for a fish sandwich and sometimes I order tapioca for dessert. You can order a full dinner special for 9.95!   Millvale has had a few floods.  Check out the high water mark.

Attic Records Round out your 45’s collection at Attic Records

Two previous blog posts you might remember- If you want to see Panza Gallery and the great linoleum floor, click here

And to see the post of Jean-Marc at work frosting a cake click here.

I think I should be on the Chamber of Commerce for downtown Millvale.

There are delicious pancakes at Pamela’s diner next door to the Lanes.  The Time to Eat clock is theirs. The hobby shop is where I bought some H&O miniatures illustrating laundry day.

Outside Roanoke VA
From the Archives when we visited Mark's Parents-in-Law in Virginia. Now I see the POSTED sign. Pulled over and took it from the car. Here's where the quote at the top comes in-"Place with trace of humanity."You see them all the time. You imagine who ran the place, who drove their vehicles up to the door? The coke bottles glass, not large. No one has been there for a long time.Rusting equipment, the tall grass. What was left inside?

Veterans Day.  More than a day off from school.   A day in November to honor all veterans- men and women in the military who have served.  And the correct spelling  “the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling ”  according to an article  “Apostrophe Sparks Veterans Day Conundrum”.  I had to look it up.  WWII, on the left my father’s brother Alan Ray Hendricks who “observed his 28th bday by flying a bombing mission  over Japanese-held Koror Island in a 7th AAF Liberator on which he is a gunner”.(old yellowed newspaper clipping)  Received the Distinguished Flying Cross.       Who do you know who has served? Scan and email a photo of a veteran you know , along with name and service and I will post a gallery of veterans.  Suzanne sent me her father-in-law and father and that sparked the idea.  rutheh@gmail.com
