She asks What do you see though yours? I went back a few years and looked through the archives and there are lots of window images. Car windshields, curio cabinets, subway and train windows, house and downtown office windows, refrigerator and store window displays.

My Sister’s Swedish Bride Doll- 1948

A gift to my sister Mary from some friends and neighbors in Mt Vernon, NY.

She wasn’t played with either, just like the italian doll I posted yesterday.

Her white clothing has yellowed even though she’s been wrapped up and tucked away.

I’m still amazed at how different angles and backgrounds create such a varied look.

My Sister’s Doll – 1947

Our Uncle Harold brought this doll to my sister in 1947. Mary was in Kindergarten. He was in the US Navy.

He brought the doll back from Naples.

She was a souvenir doll, not a play doll.

A couple of days ago, I put her in Mary’s NYC apartment window and photographed her from different angles.

Her straw hat wouldn’t stay on her head and I didn’t want to force it.

As I took her photo, her eyes seemed to follow me and I moved her around to try and get a good pose and shot.

Have you ever noticed how something inanimate can feel it has a life?

Donna’s Grandmother Anna b. 1884 Crocheted a Doll’s Dress and Donna Crocheted a July 4th Doll

Today after school I went to visit my friend Donna. She had commented that she had a doll collection when she saw the post of Barbara’s dolls last week. I asked her if I could come over and photograph her collection.

Here’s a painting of her Grandmother – Anna Kugler, born in Germany est. 1884 according to the 1940 census I was able to find. The artist is Donna’s Uncle Francis, Anna’s son. There are two more paintings he painted. The snowy back yard with the bird feeder is Donna’s parents backyard.

Donna’s Aunt , Sister Evarista, created this nun doll c. 1950. The clothes are made from an acutal whipple and habit from the Order of St. Joseph.

Uncle Charles Goodall, Donna’s father’s brother, brought back the Koala bear from Australia in WW II.

Fellow Blogger’s Comment Spurs Action

It was Janet of Sustainabilitea blog, ( This,that and the other thing/ Looking at life through writing and photography) who wrote in a comment “these photos would make great puzzles”.

She was right. Thanks, Janet, for the super idea. (original post of the doll collection was just January 6th).

I went down the hill to give my friend the early birthday present and it was a cool surprise. Waiting until the actual birthday on the 29th was too long. Barb was really thrilled with the origianl idea and I told her how a fellow blogger suggested making the photo into a puzzle. Her husband thought the photo below would make a cool document of the idea come to fruition.

It came in a lovely tin. Ravensburger USA in New Hampshire did a super job.

How much fun it would be to photograph collections to be made into jigsaw puzzles.

Shirley Temple Still in her Box, Toodles, a Nun Doll. a Yo-Yo Doll and Other Childhood Friends

My friend Barb collects all kinds of dolls, most from her childhood, There’s a photo of her in one of the pics, holding her doll. She has a glass and wooden cupboard filled with her collection. The reflection makes it tricky to get a clean shot, I looked up Toodles and she is definitely a contemporary from our childhood years in the ’50’s. What do you collect?

Raggedy Duo in Public Domain But Does Anyone Play With Them Nowadays?

Never used nowadays lately but had to look it up to be sure I spelled it correctly.

While in Ohio this past weekend, I was helping sort through some toys in the playroom. Matchbox cars here, a duffel bag of puppets, strollers and baby dolls and a whole tub of action figures like Batman and Star Wars light sabers. A box of wooden blocks.

The grandchildren are growing up and many of the younger toys aren’t being played with and room needs to be made for new ventures.

These Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls were gifts from Great Aunt Bobbie when Anna(9) was born. They looked exactly the same way they have smiled at me for all these years. No change in expression. Just grinning. They looked almost brand new.

I took them upstairs and set them up in my father’s old oak rocker which is now in Mark’s office. They didn’t object to being photographed. I started thinking about rag dolls and how they aren’t trendy and I wondered if people are still buying them. These are lovingly handmade in Kansas City and I think of them as classics.
