Babka or Paska for Easter

This loaf was purchased at Weiland's Market in Clintonville Ohio
Babka or Paksa. That's what's on the Reinecker's Bakery label.

Babka

“the Polish and Belarusian noun babka and the Belarusian,Ukrainian, Macedonian, Bulgarian and Russian baba means “grandmother” or “old woman”, and as applied to the pastry probably refer to its shape, a tall cylinder, sometimes with corrugations resembling a skirt’s pleats.[1]

or Paska.

“Paska breads are a traditional element in the easter holidays of Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Romania, Moldova, Georgia and parts of Bulgaria”

“Paska is made with milk, butter, eggs, sugar, except in Romania, where the recipe most commonly includes sweet cream, cottage cheese and/or sour cream with eggs, sugar, raisins and rum.  An egg and water mixture is used as a glaze.”

I can tell you that it tasted delicious.  It is said to have a Brioche-like quality and there is a richness due to those moist golden raisins and the bread has just a hit of sweetness.  Add a little butter.  Mmmmm.

Here is a recipe from the Brown Eyed Baker for Paska Easter Bread and it has FIVE egg yolks.

Here is a recipe for Polish Babka Easter Bread from King Arthur’s Flour with three whole eggs.

Eggs and Snow in Berlin

Snowing in Berlin – Easter morning. A wet snow. Cheerful colored eggs hanging on branches remind us it’s Spring. Happy Easter.

Following the bunny trail

Good thing I had a passenger in front seat this morning. I’m calling this post a group guest blog cause it was a team effort!

Maura passed up the good camera from my bag in the back and Anna was able to capture this load of large Easter eggs. Were we ever surprised to be following them down the road!

Fortunately, Anna could get all three eggs as the truck approached the roundabout.

Maura read that they were headed for the Columbus Zoo. And helped me upload the photos from the camera this evening.

Remember Anna’s photo of the pickup truck with the mannequin legs ?

Our first sighting.

Airedales and Baby on Easter Walk

Yesterday’s post it was formal portraits. Today it’s candids. Capturing the day with a few casual images.

A sunny Easter afternoon.  We went for a walk around the neighborhood.

Michael and Jack had Airedale duty.  Anna carried Charlie.

When we got back to the house the children hunted for hidden eggs in the backyard.  Some of the eggs opened with a fortune cookie message inside ” A special day with Charlie.” “You pick what’s for supper”  “You pick the family movie”  “One day of no chores” “Two hours of Ipad time”  and some eggs had dollar bills, quarters or dimes.
