Frank Zamboni, A Household Name

….at least the Zamboni part.

Frank Zamboni introduced the ice resurfacing machine in 1949.

The weekly photo challenge is names

Anyone who watches hockey has heard of the name Zamboni. I just like the sound of it. Who wouldn’t love to drive one around the ice? screen-shot-2017-01-12-at-11-12-23-pm

Ice Skating Saturday Night

Jack was invited to an  birthday party at the ice skating rink. He was so excited.   Mark took him.

We came an hour later for “free skate” but I didn’t don skates.

A good photo op for Grandma, who happened to have the real camera, not just the iPhone.

Lots of reflections, not enough light or too much light.

Made adjustments.

On the way home I got to photograph a brightly lit house display as I was in the passenger seat.

Zamboni at Ice Castle

Castle Shannon ,PA.

Castle Shannon Boulevard.

Ice Castle Arena.   I’d driven around in the dark in unfamiliar territory, spending a few minutes on Castle Road, a reidential neighborhood  NOT the right castle.

Here is Zamboni on Ice after the second period.

One of my students plays on the Carrick team and invited me to come and watch and bring my camera.  I sent his mom the photos I took of him but am posting this one of the Zamboni driver, grooming the ice for the third period.

Or resurfacing as they say in the biz.

Zamboni biz.  Kudos to Frank Zamboni (1901-1988) who invented this mighty machine.

Mr. Lenny Moran-Burgh Nation T- Shirt Man

Saturday morning I drove down to the Strip District of the city to purchase items for the cookie table for the wedding. Ingredients; pistachios, hazelnuts, almond paste, Portuguese Pignoli Nuts, anise seed, fig jam, and some doilies for the cookie trays. Stopped by the Steeler Nation T-shirt display and told the proprietor his shirts were being worn in Zagreb. I bought them last year. We struck up a conversation and before you know it, Mr. Lenny Moran opened his a guitar case and showed me where Tom Petty had signed it T.P. and then had a well-worn leaflet autographed by Muhammed Ali. Turns out Lenny is a songwriter as well as a Steeler Nation T-shirt entrepreneur. If you’re from Pittsburgh you might have heard his Rock’n the Igloo!   Check out his burghnationtees.   He had a tablet with wireless capability and I was able to show him the post of the Steelers slide show where he was featured last January.   Lenny had placed Steelers folding chairs to save a parking spot for a couple of nuns who came and set up a table to sell Advent wreaths.  It was a nice morning.  He graciously consented (I hadn’t asked last January) to be on the blog.  Thanks Mr. Lenny Moran.

Penguin Fans Watch Stanley Cup Playoffs on Giant TV

The roads blocked off, I didn’t want to get out and walk around. Steve drove us down after dinner at Grant Ave Bar in Millvale.  We watched it on the TV in the bar as we ate.  The mood was festive. Penguins beat the Canadiens 6-3 Just wanted to check out the scene.

Giant TV downtown at Mellon Arena. People actually have a plaid couch. Streets closed.
Night starting to fall. Shot out of Steve's window from the passenger seat while at a red light.
