Invitation to Read

A basket of books at the Urgent Care waiting room.  The Delaware County District Library offers the gift of a book as you wait.

There was a basket of children’s books on  another end table.  I took a James Patterson mystery titled Mary Mary for my sister Mary.

I read the recipes in one but left it for someone else.

Thank you Friends at the Delaware County  District  Library.

(My son Mark had a scratched cornea-ouch– our reason for being there.  He’s on the mend)

Nicholas C. Ridge Free Library on Friendship Avenue

Right across from the hornet nest is one of the free standing libraries I’ve read about.  Right in someone’s front yard.

We walked over and opened the glass door.  Beautiful craftsmanship and the wood unweathered.

Turns out it was installed just this June.

We didn’t take a book but it was a nice find.  And now we know where we can go to get a book, twenty four hours a day.

The plaque said Nicholas C Ridge  Free Library and if you click on the link you can read the story.

The light was waning but took a few shots.

The Village of Rockton Illinois Afternoon

Another Spring Break post-

Mary and I drove from Durand, Illinois (our mother’s hometown and the town where our parents were married in 1939)

to Rockton, Illinois in Winnebago County.

We browsed in Main Street Antiques Mall and Mary bought a couple of handkerchiefs.  There were two vintage jukeboxes playing records as we enjoyed looking at all the vintage items.

We had these exact bookends in the house when I was growing up.  I think they are at Mark and Erika’s house now

Wedding Cake Ice Cream was the recommended flavor at the Dairyhäus, according to a guidebook Mary had read in NYC.

The Dairyhäus was located right next to the library and opened at 3 PM.

I sampled several flavors but decided on the Peter Rabbit which was a carrot cake flavor. Mary had the Toffee Fudge.  Ice Cream season had just started.  One employee who has worked NINE seasons at the Dairyhäus created the counted cross stitch Care Bears sampler.

Brent MurrayOwner Brent Murray shows off an ice cream cake his wife had just put together in the back.  Brent really enjoys his work!  He said mother had purchased the ice cream store in 1994 and he has been there ever since. He’s enthusiastic about his product and with good reason.

You Get 200 Selections on this Machine- Vote Now!

This is from a friend’s birthday party last January.  A Juke Box not a voting machine.  Through the Years.

I thought some of the titles could  be put to good use after the election results are in. Seems everyone has lost their sense of humor these days. Friendships and families, relationships strained.  Every individual is pretty certain they are correct in their thinking and can’t fathom why anyone might feel totally opposite or even a few inches opposite.

Help,  I’m Down, or Chances Are .

and for some it will be Celebration and Big Girls Don’t Cry.

We’ll skip Stormy.

What about This Masquerade?

One thing I am sure of… no matter who wins…. we will be Shake Rattle and Roll into the new year no matter what.  Seriously.  I have heard people from both sides and (in- between) say they can’t wait until it is over.  The ads on TV and all. The robo-calls. The hype. The Self-Applause.  The millions spent. Billions. Could have been put to good use in school libraries. Well, the schools that still have libraries and full time librarians.

What’s going to happen?  What will become of us?    It’s Not For (just)Me to Say!

Water Tower Message Completed

It was a wonderful milestone birthday celebration and there are photos of sparklers and candles and fireworks seen from the backyard. They are still in the camera.

The cake Laura baked, Erika’s garden eggplant, Mark grilling shrimp, the kids enjoying Grandma’s birthday party, the card they made for me- waiting on the flash card til tomorrow.  Below is the breakfast of a special raisin loaf (avert your eyes, Greg) that Marlene (Erika’s mom) brought up from Roanoke.  You might remember we were supposed to go to VA for the fourth celebration but they lost power in the violent storm almost a week ago and still don’t’ have it back.

And a crazy couple of shots from a sweltering parade July 4th AM.  They are in the camera on the flash card and not uploaded tonight.  But I wanted to return to this scene on Tuesday to photograph the sign on the water tower I had photographed on Monday..

No longer just d-e-l-a-w .  You might have seen the partially painted message on Tuesday’s post d-e-l-a-w-

I offered to return the library items and took Murphy for a ride, cranked up the AC and left the rear window open a crack for that rush of air he likes to feel on his nose.

Pulled over right after the railroad track and got out and took three shots.  How those men were able to paint in this extreme heat I can’t imagine.

I didn’t know this area was considered a playground but it is complete and here is the photo of it.

And isn’t this handy?  A drive through library return?  I ‘ve never seen one where you drive through. In the city they have large metal depositories outside the library but nothing this convenient.  A smart design.

Carnegie Library- East Liberty- Grand Opening

Saturday August 28th at 10:00 AM.  Grand Opening of the East Liberty Branch of the Carnegie Library Pittsburgh.   Drove by on the way home from Meet & Greet at school tonight and the movie trucks were all parked in front so couldn’t get the view they show on their website – click for more info on their hours. The setting sun made the stone glow on East Liberty Presbyterian (Architect Ralph Adams Cram designed Calvary Episcopal Church in Shadyside as well)     I love libraries. Years ago when I used to bowl with the Greenfield Lunch Ladies I met  a nice woman Doris who worked in the branch before it was closed, gutted, and rebuilt.

The church towers over East Liberty and the perspective is off but the stone is alive in the setting sun.
