Souvenir

Souvenir-

a thing that is kept as a reminder of a person, place, or event.

There are two pronunciations of souvenir (soo-vuh–neer or soo–vuh-neer) Which do you say?

Perhaps you avoid collecting souvenirs, adding to the accumulation. I have a few examples. A salt and pepper shaker from Yellowstone Park purchased in 1963 by me. A Volksmarch Stein and a ceramic tile from Grafenwoehr Germany where we lived for three years 1983-1986. A dish towel. Christmas ornaments (from my Ohio family’s collection) a refrigerator magnet with Beignets.

In our city there is a shop up on Mt. Washington called love, Pittsburgh where you can get Pittsburgh themed gifts. The Florida pillow was in the U of Florida bookstore but I did not purchase it. The demitasse cup and saucer from a favorite restaurant, La Cucina Flegrea, no longer in business.

Do you keep a souvenir or two or three? Any special mementos of a place you have visited? My sister’s Coney Island Paperweight was a souvenir in Saturday’s gallery.

When my friend Ann sees this post she will write and say “Pitch them!”

Millvale Murals are Masterpieces

Right in Millvale PA, across the Allegheny River from Pittsburgh.

” Croatian artist Maxo Vanka painted a one-of-a-kind masterpiece on the interior walls of St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale, PA. The 25 murals—created in two intense periods in 1937 and 1941—are unique, evocative and larger-than-life representations of faith and family; the immigrant experience in America; social justice and injustice and the horrors of war” from the website Vanka Murals

When I parked on Grant Avenue, I noticed the banner sign on the lamppost and remembered seeing these dramatic and stunning murals at St. Nicholas Church. Information on the website link about how to get a tour and how to support the preservation of these significant and historic artworks.

Five Ceramic Trivet Tiles

My sister-in-law has a houseful of these ceramic tiles. Seriously, you’d be astounded if you saw her collection. I’ll have to get a number. How convenient they’re squares. AND circles in squares.

With just a couple days left to respond to the March Square challenge, I was rummaging in the the built-in China closet.

These were standing up in the back along the shelf. I placed them on various tiles and tables around the house to capture them for the challenge .

The waterfalls and pools are everywhere you look. We took the boardwalk you see from the aerial view photo, a bus on winding roads with no guard rail through the forests and a boat ride on a glacial lake. Good photos for water and earth, but no fire.

Truffle Atop Poached Egg and Wild Asparagus Risotto

What an evening of taste bud surprises! WOW.

We took an evening tram to meet my son’s friends at a café. Because it was the night before the Easter Holiday, every seat was taken. Quite a wait for a table. Everyone celebrating being off the next workday.

Bummer- BUT When the friends arrived they had a discussion for an alternate plan. Wow, did I ever luck out that the café was full. One went to procure a bottle of red.

The first delight was I’s Sour Cherry apéritif which he’d made. At first, I was worried it might burn but my concerns were totally unfounded. In fact, the drink defined summer captured in a slim crystal cylinder. All I can say it the ruby liquid of summer’s sour cherries woke up every taste bud in my mouth. Delicious. Not to sweet, not too tart, zero burn. Perfection!

And then the surprise of M’s creation- Poached egg on fresh bread with the fruitiest most fragrant olive oil drizzle AND the unexpected luxurious truffle on top of the gently poached farm egg. Or “home eggs” as my family refers to them.

I was feeling quite content with all I had eaten. Italian cheese and olives to start and then the Sour Cherry apéritif and the lovely truffle surprise. And then the Wild Asparagus Risotto was ready to eat. Freshly Grated Cheese on top. Oh my. So bold. It was wild! A flavor I’dd never before experienced, created by a culinary expert.

I was happy to meet my son’s friends and be invited into a Zagreb home to experience these tastes and more importantly their friendship and hospitality.

Meet Slaven Lunar Kosanović

Meet Slaven Lunar Kosanović.

Artist. Designer. Illustrator.

You may have seen his artwork in Forbes Magazine or Playboy but didn’t know it! or click his name and see his walls, canvases and illustrations

We ran into him at an artist’s evening at the Croatian Design Superstore in Zagreb last week. My son introduced us.

He’s holding a book created for a humanitarian effort, restoring a church fresco. (Reminder to self; always carry notebook and writing implement to record important/accurate details)

Slaven just sent me this updated information

I found the text “The book ‘Adris Foundation – contribution to Croatian society since 2007’ presents funded projects – each project is described and illustrated by one of 26 illustrators. The ‘Danse macabre’ fresco by Vincent of Kastav from 1474 has always simultaneously fascinated and dreaded me so it was a logical choice for me. Project name: Laboratory examination and protection of the Beram frescos / Project bearer: Juraj Dobrila University of Pula, Project leader: Dr. Sc Emina Pustijanac”

Slaven with his father, whose excellent English made easy conversation for me at the Croatian Design Superstore.
