On my classroom keyboard was a nice note, written on composition paper, from the computer man who stopped in yesterday  –

back up computer- hard drive must be replaced.

Now one thing I know is that discussing any sort of computer issue is instant snooze z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z

BUT look what I found today as I copied photos to a borrowed external hard drive!

A photo I took last Spring of my on the way to school.

I’m in the oval mirror.  Really.  And I loved the carport and the seemingly crooked pole.

Thanks for looking and thanks for all the good birthday wishes for Michael’s 8th yesterday.

I got to partake in the festivities via FaceTime along with the other grandparents in Virginia and it was fun.

Ninth graders come to school tomorrow for orientation.

School’s Out for the Summer!

Well it WILL be out come Monday, June 17th (the final day without students)

The lockers were all opened and cleared out after the students left. What a collection in the lost and found.

I still have to turn in my keys and get signed out. The grade summary reports got turned in Friday. The books packed from the shelves in boxes or cupboards.  Ripped down the bulletin board paper and thought about what color for next fall.

This lone work boot and the baseball were in the hallway by an open locker.

Thought about how I could have rearranged the still life to improve the composition but didn’t touch it,

just moved myself and the camera.

Happy Summer-  I’m turning off all alarms.

Unexpected Gift

The seniors in sixth period finished their Digital Photography exam.   And after homeroom, the seniors were allowed to go home.

One of the young women in the class and my homeroom, handed me this two tone metal dog pin and said, “Here Ms. Hendricks.  This is for you.”

I was so surprised. She’d made it in Jewelry Class.

I took the highly polished pin and pinned it on my shirt collar, fastening the safety clasp, thanked her and told her how lovely it was….  but then as I thought about it, I asked her if maybe she should give it to someone in her family, it was so beautiful.

She said, “No, I want you to have it.”

My first year teaching high school is coming to a close.  I’m touched when asked to sign a yearbook. They want me to bring my camera to graduation on Saturday.

I’ve learned a lot.

Thank you Jaquea.                                           (p.s.  It is really difficult to photograph highly polished metal)

Big Dreams

It seems from the emails from friends and followers that comcast.net and verizon. net are the largest group not receiving my daily post via my gmail account. There are a few others, too.

Even a new email address and a different provider the next time I sent it, for some reason these addresses think the blog post is the processed meat in a little blue can.  (I don’t even want to write the name of it – )

Why after almost four years of daily blog sending it is refusing my emails is something I don’t understand.  No bounced back email, no sign of it in spam.  People have difficulty subscribing to the blog at wordpress, not receiving a confirmation email.    So what changed?

Did someone get in my email?  I’ve changed all the passwords and there are no signs of compromise that I can detect.  At least a few people wondered what happened to me and others have let me know they are receiving it just fine without a hitch.  Did wordpress change something?  What is suspicious these days?  Who knows.  Seems other wordpressers are in good shape but the email situation is exasperating.  Thanks for your patience. I did read in an article How To Tell if you are Boring Someone, and one tip was –don’t talk about computer problems. Thanks for your input xxooxx  Ruth E.

And the Post Today————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Photographer Martin Weber had a show at Silver Eye Center of Photography called A Map of Latin American Dreams about three and a half years ago.  I remembered the faces of the people he photographed and how he documented their dreams and desires on a small chalkboard in every image.   He is the inspiration for this project.

We used black construction paper and white chalk.  I showed the students his photographs first.  Then talked about dreams.  I encouraged the students to write specifically.

Today I can’t show you the faces of the students who did this project in my Digital Photography Classes but I wanted to share some of their dreams.

We converted all the dream photos into black and white and then made a display in the classroom.  Of course the faces of the students amplify the effectiveness of the composition and evoke emotion but these are just the handwritten dreams of a select few students as we come to the close of the school year (last day for me June 17th)

This could be a good project for many levels of students  These are 9-12th graders.  I wrote down my dream, too.

How about those Tiffany columns? The marble, the windows, the painted ceiling? And all the student artwork? Wow!

Inspired by Christopher Boffoli Miniature Food Work

When I saw photographer, Christopher Boffoli’s work, I thought that this was something we could do in the digital photo classroom.  He has really perfected the art in this department of miniature food scenes.   And we tried to recreate one of his ideas at school. The miniatures are so appealing.Miniature Food Scene

Only problem is 6 mini HO scale figures run almost 14 bucks at Esther’s Hobby Shop  so that makes it pricey.          They’re fragile too but oh so fun.

The Oreos were on sale at Giant Eagle.  But they don’t last, either.   I took in beans and rice and we had some Cheerios but it just wasn’t feasible for more than 120 students to get satisfactory results.

This is one of my practice shots.  The students liked the little figures.  I had some larger plastic dogs that they photographed, too.

Thanks Mr. Boffoli for the cool inspiration.  It isn’t that easy to do it as successfully as you’ve done.

I’d photographed a model railroad mother hanging out the wash before but not the whole scene with props.

Be sure to check out his picture show at this link cause his creativity and imagination is endless.

You Can Submit a Photo of a Photo to Dear Photograph

Today I received an email from my son’s FIL, Donald,  about a photo concept and website- take a picture of an old photograph in the same location where it was taken.  He must have seen it and knew it would be something I would enjoy looking at.  Boy, I’ll say……………..

The website is Dear Photograph and now that I’ve gone and read about it all, I must be the last to hear about it.

Dear Photograph is all over the news. It was even on  the TODAY show.  There’s a book of photographs using this concept that the young author/photographer Taylor Jones has authored.  Simple and satisfying.  Touching and fun.

So I looked at what was done and thought I would dig out a few photographs and give it a try.   I just skimmed the tip of the iceberg as I limited my search to one box and a single framed photo – the one of the family in front of the house is Fall 1991, the year we moved into the house.  Laura was in the third grade, Matthew fifth and Mark a Sophomore in HS.

And then I tried it. I found it tricky to hold up the photo and shoot with one hand. These are shot with the iPhone camera. I’m sure with a bit of balancing and practice the outcome could be improved but it was fun and I enjoyed trying to capture the photo of the photo.

Here are the results.  Thank you Taylor Jones for the cool inspiration.  I know the blogging community probably knows all about you  and your website already but I’m glad Donald sent me the link to your website this morning.   See what you can come up with using your old photographs. Having moved9 times in 16 years, there are a lot of photos of places I can’t return to and take the shot.

A Vapor Trail, the Moon and Thursday’s Sunrise in the High School Windows

Tuesday’s dawn was beautiful.  Two days later, the view on the way into school included the  moon and the vapor trail of a jet. A gift to start the day!  The shot on this day has a bit more of the scene too- the parking lot, the sidewalk, the corner of the school.view at school
