Mayor Richard S. Caligiuri Statue in the Snow

Photographed while at a red light on Valentine’s Day 2015.

On the steps of the City County Building.

This is a bronze sculpture of former mayor (served 1977-1988), Richard S. Caliguiri.

Here’s an article he wrote about facing his diagnosis of the fatal disease amyloidosis.

“On October 19, 1990 a statue of Richard S. Caliguiri was dedicated on the steps in front of Pittsburgh’s City-County Building. The sculpture was made by well-known sculptor Robert Berks. It stands 9 feet tall and is 3 feet wide.”

Snow Day Tugboat and Barges Push Through the River Ice

School got called off so I went to take some photographs on the way home.

1degree and -16 windchill. I didn’t stay long with my cameras.

My friends Deb and Sy live downstream along the Ohio River. They emailed me the cell phone photos they took at eye level as the tug cut through frozen Ohio River ice

Presidents’ Day Party Supplies in the Strip District- Pittsburgh PA

After Christmas I was in the Strip District with Matthew and Natalya. We had coffee at La Prima and lunch at Sunseri’s. A little window shopping, popped into the kitchen store and then Wholey’s to see the fish.

One “must-see” store is Mike Feinberg’s on Penn Ave. Right now you can stock up on Leprauchan supplies. Or Mardi Gras masks and beads.

You name it- they have it. Postcards and old school candy, too.

This is what we saw up front. Presidents’ Day supplies. There were tons of New Year’s hats and horns, pre-packaged party supplies for any number of guests.

“Above the Fold” on Valentine’s Day

Long time friends and neighbors, the Skrinjars were featured in the newspaper today.

Our children went to school together years ago.

This morning they brought the copy of the newspaper to my house so when I got home from shooting a lovely Valentine’s Day wedding, their story was on the front page of the LIVING section, above the fold!

I took the accompanying photograph of them when they invited Steve and me to a Pirates Game last September.

Today on Valentine’s Day is an article by Rex Rutoski titledMarried to My Best Friend (Valentine’s pals: Longtime spouses weigh in on matters of the heart)

Light Streams at the Museum

I was waiting on a bench in the lobby while Matthew and Natalya were in the galleries.

I saw the light stream through the windows onto the floor.

A family was examining a portion of the Sebastian Errazuriz: Look Again exhibit.

Different Dollhouse Occupants- Simpsons Chess Set

When I was visiting my friend Donna (with the doll collection), I was leaving and I noticed her granddaughter’s dollhouse and the occupants.

The SIMPSONS? They are just the right size.

Her Uncle Tony’s chess set put to use. She’d arranged them so neatly, all in a row.

(I didn’t even know there was a Simpsons Chess Set.)

Combine Two Objects in the Classroom, But Don’t Show the Classroom

One of the hardest and ongoing lessons is teaching composition and students needing to take multiple shots of a subject.

So often they are satisfied with the first image they shoot.

Today in the Photography classes, I asked the students to choose two objects and combine them in a new and different way to create a more interesting image.

I showed them the first photo of the two objects i selected as an example-

I shot the first with all the cluttered background of the classroom. The second one was to be cleaned up- not show the environment. No backpacks, chairs, notebooks, pencils, computers, students.

Here’s the DON’T

I picked up the student camera from a table

overexposure with the setting

and a student’s finger holding the piece of paper as background to block the clutter is visible,

but the objective is closer to being met.

Roll of tape and a rubber dog.

Trying to encourage them to keep at it and try something different. Try different angles and distance. Change the light.

Moonlight Commute

Headed to the garage, time for school.

I make tentative choices- try to place my feet

When I unlock the car, the rear lights show where it’s rough on the

temporary ice rink.

Thaw and melt

makes frozen glass on top of gravel and mud. I saw the moon.

Down the slick hill to the main road,

I pulled over, waited for cloud cover to move

A couple of grainy cell phone pics, try to capture the moon, the mood-

then off to work.

Late in the Day View from the School Parking Lot

The light shone on a row of houses in the neighborhood. I was going to my car at the end of a long Saturday afternoon in the gym, watching some of my students perform in the dance, color guard and majorette competition.

I thought about scale again. Size relationships. How the one house close looked big, the sunlit row much smaller.

But that would be for perspective week, right?
